Dual Fuel Tank Installation

David Kimmel, Harmony, Sloop No. 38

I hope the attached pictures help. I placed the dimensions on the pictures. The tanks were mocked up in plywood to make sure they would go to place.

Port Fuel TankPort Side TankThe Port tank is up against the bulk head as seen in the pictures. It is somewhat centered by the noted spacers. Make sure that the lines and gauges going into the tanks can draw with out moving the tank. If you ever have to change the float on the guage you want to be able to pull it without moving the tank. Each hatch is 10" square. I would make them a bit bigger for cleaning. I would also add the third line to go to the bottom of the tank to pull of water or for fuel polishing..

Starboard Fuel TankThe STB tank is also against the bulk head but a hanging locker moves theis bulkhead aft When I placed the tanks I had moved the battery bank to the aft locker. Since then I have moved the battery bank back to the STB locker to place the generator in the AFT locker. So you will need to move the battery bank. I do like having the batteries evenly laid out instead of the staggered placement orginaly. It leaves a nice storage area under the batteries that you can get to now the old tank is gone.

Spacing from the hullEach tank is 30" tall and curved to match the hull some what.

Fuel Tank ControlThe Fuel control panel should be placed somewhere that if it leaks it's not a big deal.....

I also placed a AUX fuel pump from NAPA before the filter but after the control panel. Really helps to fill the filter when changing.

I think the pictures tell the rest of the story.. If not ask away.

I used to keep both tanks filled but if there is a place that has bad fuel I always am lucky and find it.. Rather a pain. So now I have one tank cleaned and leave dry. The other I keep full. When I go on a trip I then fill both tanks. If I remember it is 40gal and 45gal per tank. One of which is more then enough for weekend sailing...
