Harold J. Sutphen

KILMARNOCK-Capt. Harold J. Sutphen USN died December 5, 2005, in Hampton.

Capt. Sutphen attended Brown University on a Navy ROTC scholarship and graduated from Tuft's University with a doctorate in political science and international law.

He pursued a career as a Navy surface warfare officer with sea assignments including command of an experimental patrol craft, an ocean minesweeper and an ammunition ship.

He moved to Norfolk to establish and command the NROTC unit at Hampton Roads. His last tour of duty in the Navy was director of Navy sailing, overseeing the Navy's professional and recreational sailing programs worldwide.

He was educational director for the Cruising Rally Association which conducts the Caribbean 1500 and Passagemaker Seminars. He participated in the association's first rally in 1990 and remained involved in all the rallies and seminars for the following 16 years.

He was a member of the New York City Yacht Club and the Rappahannock River Yacht Club.

He was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

He was a docent at the Reedville Fishermen's Museum and skipper of the museum's historic skipjack.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Sutphen; a brother and sister-in-law, William H. and Priscilla Sutphen; four children, Harold John Sutphen Jr., Joan Alice Sutphen, Sherab Khando and Suzanne Maheu; and four grandchildren.
