Hi Stephen, No doubt others here have successfully bedded those brow pieces. I tried and failed a couple of times. They just seemed designed to leak, plus mine were cracking from age and PO neglect. So I scrapped them altogether, filled the screw holes, and painted a 1″ stripe in their stead, the color matching Silverheels’ cove & boot stripes. IMHO, it looks better, it certainly reduced maintenance, and it doesn’t leak. I’m sure there is much gratification in restoring things to their original glory on these good old boats, but the greater fun for me has been finding or inventing improvements for their shortcomings. Of course, it’s rarely about right or wrong, but just what pleases you on your boat. Have fun, Tor———————-Silverheels, P-424 #17www.silverheels.us——————
Many thanks, Tor, would like to see a picture of your brow stripe painted on. I like the idea of reducing maintenance and of course leaks, which is why I started this project. Did your eyebrow pieces have a channel cut in the back of them?
Have attached a few photos; as you can see all of the screw holes have small cracks radiating from them. I opened them up a bit and filled with epoxy; still have to finish sand them. You can also see that all of my grab rails are pretty well worn down so much that bunges cannot even be fitted to cover the bolts. When I get to those I plan on installing SS grab rails. I installed them on my wee boat project in Singapore and liked them. Used SS end piece and risers from New Found Metals.
Portlights all need to be rebedded or replaced, but will make that the subject of another mail; the 6 smaller ones are plastic were made by Beckson; the 4 larger ones are aluminum; uncertain of manufacturer, no markings.
Thanks again, Tor!
