Robert,
I’m not getting rid of the locker, I’m enlarging it. Here’s why: I’m replacing the old manual windlass that came with my
boat with a big, new, vertical electric Lofrans. The new windlass needs to sit an inch or so above deck level to align
properly with the incoming anchor rodes, so I could not mount it down in the existing locker as built by Pearson even if
I wanted to. Also, a vertical electric windlass has its drive motor below the deck, which takes up space in an already
undersized chain locker – undersized largely because of the day-anchor shelf Pearson built into our boats. I can’t use
that shelf for ground tackle. I need a full size, divided chain locker to accommodate 150′ of 3/8″ chain plus 100′ of
5/8″ rode on one side, and 50′ of 3/8″ chain plus 200′ of 5/8″ rode on the other, minimum, all fed by the windlass.
So I’m building the locker I need and decking it over. Quite the little project. Neat features include removable locker
divider panels so I can squeeze into the locker from the forepeak to service things, a deckwash pump mounted on a
remaining portion of the original shelf, and a large, opening deck plate forward of the windlass so I can access and
make use of the foremost section of shelf, which I have left in tact.
I’m surprised it has taken this long for Railmakers to get your mast pulpits to you. Mine are lying on the coachhouse
waiting for me to get around to installing them. Meanwhile, I’m up forward cutting big holes in my deck, grinding
‘glass, and generally reinventing the wheel. Fun!
