Uuhhhmmmmm. SO if I understand you, you got a 4d into the same compartment under the bunk as Tor’s installation? That’s pretty cool.

I think my start batter is Grp 27, I’ll have to check that, and it’s in the starboard hanging locker. I like the idea of just popping and extra battery in. It doesn’t get me the space but would sure be easier.

The more I think about it, the more I think I might have killed my current 4d with stupidity. I ran the TV at the dock a couple times with shore power unplugged. SO I guess I’ll try just replacing the current batteries for now and being more careful. I like SCAD’s little alarm thinghy, but I think my xantrex also has a similar feature. When I get back to the boat I’m gonna figure out how to use it 🙂

Do any of you electrical magicians have any thoughts on the wisdom of replacing just one of a pair of 4d AGMs?

Hi Aaron,

My additional 4D is in the compartment aft of the water heater where there is also a group 31 for the starter battery. I’d send you a picture but the pile of parts is still too high to allow access (but it is getting smaller. Really.)

I’m still very much contemplating all of this, so thank you very much for your input.
Where’s the additional 4d? Is there a box glassed in aft of the stock boxes?

I just keep staring at the void forward of the battery boxes and know I can get a lot more power into less space. That plus I’m miffed that I have to replace a 3 year old 4d AGM to the tune of $300 and am wondering if I would be a penny wise and pond foolish not replacing both at the same time, or just ripping everything out and staring fresh which is my inclination. 🙂

In case you’re interested, I still have the original boxes in the starboard locker plus an additional 4D in the same locker as a house bank, and finally a group 31 as a starter battery with it.

Aaron,

Yes, it was I who put the house bank under the aft bunk. And yes, it was tight – tighter than a… well, very tight (photos attached). In my boat there was no thru-hull in that compartment, but there is a wire bundle and a pair of hoses leading to the water heater in the next compartment forward, plus a run of copper tubing and wires headed for the refrigerator. I had to cut new holes in the bulkheads fore and aft for all that stuff so they could be shifted enough to make space for the five Group 31 AGM batteries I installed. I cut a series of holes so I could move the bundles without disconnecting things, which saved me about a month’s extra work. That compartment is an excellent space for sealed batteries, but not sufficiently ventilated for lead-acid batteries.
