Thanks for the info.
One other question I forgot to ask, you mention getting a bunch of licenses and that they enable you to shop at a PX.
Which license does that, and can you show me where it says that? I’ve passed the test for OUPV and am currently studying for masters and tow. It would be great if a merchant marine license got me on base to buy stuff cheap. (plus it’s fun to look around military bases once in a while, it’s just very rare that I’ve been sponsored to be on one (twice in 20 years).

Hi Aaron,
Thanks for the nice words – I’ve been so busy with the boat that I’ve not kept it up.
I did, indeed, leave the old winches for several reasons – one, I may get a spinnaker, and two, I the big winches are good for kedging where the anchor windlass is not.
I set the new winches as far outboard as I could, as close to the rigging as I could and still operate the 10″ handles comfortably and so I could sit on the coaming when sailing. The only one that needed a turning block is the port one and like Tor on Silver Heels, it was a simple cheek block mounted just aft of the mizzen stay. I also added a rubstrake on the angle of the coaming to keep the line from rubbing through the gelcoat.
The starboard side doesn’t need a block because the line wraps outboard.
I struggled with the idea of putting one on both sides for symmetry, but didn’t. It would be expensive symmetry.
The hailer is sitting on my aft bunk. It will go on my mizzen below the radar. The TV antenna will go above the radar. The new radio has a remote mic on the sternrail. Very easy to use.
Here’s what I learned with the pulpits:
1. Measure, measure, measure. Then measure again – I set the first hole the same by measuring from the mast and all the stays, then marked the same place on the other side. It will be close. I also moved mine aft so that they are even with the mast because I want to use my staysail without flogging it on the mast rails.
2. Patience is a virtue. Really. Don’t use 5 minute epoxy. Devcon makes a really cool 2500# epoxy with injector that automatically mixes it as it’s injected. True, you need a mess of them, but the convenience was amazing. But they take 30 minutes to set. Wait the 30 minutes. Really.
3. When you put the 4200UV to bed the rails don’t try to clean it up. Wait till it cures. Much easier.
Other than that, it’s all good. I’ll be posting the winch pictures and the rail pictures right soon.

Robert,
I just checked out your blog, It’s great, I dunno how I missed that before.
I have some questions! 🙂
When you installed the new winches, I take it that you left the old ones in place? Have you sailed with them yet? If so where’d you mount blocks?
You mentioned installing your VHF, did you also put a hailer horn on the mast? Is it protected from the foresail with a radar antenna, or something else? I’m definitely anxious to see the pulpits!

Hi Alan,
I’ll be putting it up on my blog (http://thesailinglife.blogspot.com) <http://thesailinglife.blogspot.com%29> and will write here, too – but I have to figure out how to shrink images for the 424 site.
