We had a hard grounding against a rock in Maine last season. The half-inch stringer underneath the galley sink had a big crack. There had been a 7×7 inch square hole cut to accommodate a large lever operated Edson bilge pump, which no doubt weakened the stringer.
There was already a hatch within the cooks “U”, but we had to cut a section of sole out of the main passage to do the repairs. After seeing how easy access is to T-hulls, etc. with the new opening, I plan to set it up as a new hatch.
The repair was to epoxy glue and thru-bolt a new piece of plywood (marine grade) to the old stringer and then glass the new piece to the hull. In order the get the new piece close enough to the hull and flush to the stringer, we had to install a spacer (a second piece of plywood) between the stringer and the main repair piece. The problem was that the curve of fillet on the stringer made it impossible to fit the repair piece flush to the stringer and to the hull.
