I copy my DVDs. The copy process removes the region code. According to the specs on the link you provided, the DVD player won’t play copies. The reason I copy them is to avoid having to worry about the DVDs being lost or damaged on the boat. When I cruise, DVD rental stores may not be within convenient walking distance from shore. The copies have the annoying coming attractions and copyright notices removed also. If I use re-recordable media, I can reuse the disk after I’ve watched the movie.
There is some disagreement about the legality of making copies. Clearly, it is illegal to make and redistribute copies. IMHO, copying DVDs is the same as using a TIVO on any copyrighted broadcast. Everyone agrees that using a TIVO is perfectly legal. The cable and satellite providers even rent them. I see no difference between recording a copyrighted broadcast on a TIVO or recording a copyrighted distribution on a DVD. In either case, you can’t redistribute.
I’m in the process of installing a Track-it-TV satellite receiver on the boat. I may not need the DVDs anymore. I’ll have to see how it works out. Dish Network has a pay-as-you-go program. Instead of purchasing a long period contract, you buy dishNOW cards in either $30 or $40 increments. When you want to activate your satellite receiver, you call them and give them the activation number on your dishNOW card. After I’ve had a chance to evaluate it, I’ll let folks know how it works out. If you have kids, the distraction of a satellite TV might make life more bearable. It also receives Redsox broadcasts, which is important for many of us on the east side of the Connecticut river.
