I wanted to be really sure as they probably haven't been moved since 1978 when they were put in. I've never seen a left hand threaded packing gland, but I've only seen maybe a dozen.

Back in the hole I go with my can of PB Blaster…

Robert, they were nomal threads on Sea Duty. They are both on the same set of threads.
Turning them counter clockwise should remove them from the packing/bearing assembly.
