Hi Chuck,
Behind the shower is an excellent place for spare bedding, clothes, parts, and other soft goods – the problem with the small water makers is that you need to operate things occasionally and that area isn't conducive to it.
Also, the water maker should be as low in the boat as possible (Katadyn recommends 2' below the waterline or just about cabin sole level.
