Hey John,
Regardless of how the buyer chooses to take his boat home, the “buyer’s
market” has been cycling around the globe for as long as I’ve paid it any
attention. In the 60’s Americans went to Europe for cheap used boats.
Briefly in the 70’s and again in the 80’s European bargain hunters came to
the US. Ten years ago you could steal boats in New Zealand if you brought US
dollars. By 2005 they cost as much there are at home. Now sailors are once
again flocking to America for sweet deals. Of course, the used boat prices
don’t really change much. It’s just fluctuations in the relative values of
the currencies that keep the bargain hunters hoppin’. I expect it’ll cycle
around again before long and we’ll all be going somewhere else for the real
deals.
