Guess we should have changed the subject for this little side discussion a while ago.
A few years back I checked again on the VA hospital perk for Coast Guard licensed skippers. It is no longer in effect. So forget free medical with your 6-pack. I don’t know what what they’d say if you were to present a Merchant Mariner’s Document.
I didn’t hear back from the PX manager I emailed yesterday about shopping in a PX with the MMD. Will try to find out elsewhere. Or has anyone else already confirmed it?

Bob, Rich, Aaron and anyone else interested:
I emailed the Commander in charge of US Military PX’s and asked whether or not a Merchant Mariner’s
Document (MMD) is considered an acceptable Military ID for shopping in a PX. The commander’s assistant’s
answer, which basically amounts to “no,” is below. Now, you might get lucky and gain entry to some PX’s
with a MMD ID card simply because the local manager or cashier doesn’t know the rule covering it, but as
you can see below the official policy does not accept MMD’s except in very specific circumstances.Tor

Bob,
If it’s any consolation, in the course of researching this I read in another sailors’ blog that the MMD is good for PX shopping. These stories get started and just keep going. Perhaps it used to be the case, as with a captain’s license getting you into VA hospitals. Or maybe one or two MMD holders have actually gotten into a PX when an ID checker didn’t know the rules well enough. Even the Commander’s assistant apparently had to research the subject before responding to my query.
But all is not lost. All you need to do is sign onto a Military Sealift Command (MSC) vessel. Then you can shop in the PX to your heart’s content!

I actually thought about an MSC vessel, except for the duty cycle (the pay is actually quite good), which is nominally 4 months out, a month back, but because of the need for men and ships usually turns out to be 4 months out, 4 months out….
