      Hi Gang,

We are a day away from having a survey done and making an offer on the 424 we are after. Once securing the purchase, we will be unable to visit and begin work on the boat until August time.. We are pretty keen to take out insurance on her but wanted to see if anyone has any good suggestions on which direction to look in.

We live in the Caribbean working as crew on boats down here. The plan would be to head to N.Carolina, get her to a sailable state, and bring her down to the islands to continue refitting her and store while we continue working to pay for her.

We want to have her insured while she’s sitting in NC until we arrive, then continue this on while we have her down in the BVI. The eventual aim is to take her on a long term cruise to most parts of the world.

Does anyone have suggestions on insurance based on our future plans?
Our other question is about registry, we aren’t sure where she is registered currently but are preparing ourselves to have to change it.
We are both UK citizens, resident in the BVI while we work here, and will eventually be cruising the world with our 424.
We are aware of the many places to register with their advantages, BVI, Cayman, Marshal, Panama, Malta etc… Does anyone care to chip in their two cents and give us your opinion on why and where?

We want to try and get the ball rolling with sorting these things out as we will hopefully be purchasing before the end of the month.

      Cheers,

      Josh & Lucy

We just had to do this as well. I found this guy Hugo recommended on someone’s blog about marine insurance. I would give him a call. He was absolutely awesome with us.

      Josh,
One thing you might run into (from personal experience) is finding an underwriter that is OK with you not having an engine. It proved impossible for us, so I hope you find otherwise! If you do, please let us know who will do it.
