What is the purpose of putting a wood stove on your boat? Are you looking for heat, cooking, or just the charm of a wood fire?

Basically take the chill out while on the mooring , and drying things out. I burn wood at home constantly.

For just a heater, Dickinson makes a small solid fuel heater targeted towards smaller 20′ to 25′ vessels that you could use in the morning and mount somewhere unobtrusive. Newport Solid Fuel Heater. It only handles a small amount of wood at a time. For a proper wood stove install you’ll have to tear out part of the cabin methinks. I’ve never seen it on a 424 but if you google “sailboat wood stove” there are plenty of examples.

You apparently know about the drawbacks of heating with wood. My home port is just north of Boston so I know about the spring and late fall chill. I put in an externally vented catalytic propane cabin heater many years ago. It works very well. Fuel consumption is a minor issue. I can go through a 6 lb bottle in a weekend. Lugging a tank is a bit easier and a lot cleaner than lugging wood though.

The Newport is the way I was leaning.
I am just south of Boston myself by the way.
I have unlimited supply of clean dry wood, from work sights . As for heating with wood at home, the only real drawback to me is dust.
I have searched online, but as of yet, have not found one installed in a 424. I suppose I will dig a little deeper. Thanks
