If the entire shoe needs to be replaced then it will likely have to be a custom fab job. If there is something wrong with the shoe – such as a rounded out hole – a competent machinist should be able to repair it. Trying to find a bronze fitting for a 40 year old boat off the shelf is probably not going to happen unless someone happens to be parting out a 424 at the moment.
Port Townsend Foundry would be my first call about fabricating an entirely new shoe but they will likely need dimensions. I haven’t see any drawings of the rudder components.
RigRite.com is also a source of custom parts and may have knowledge about the shoe or where to get one easier.
I’ll reach out to them via Facebook about whatever problem they are having with the website. Our e-mail system is being swamped by all sorts of spam and alerts at the moment.
