As I understood all the discussion , I believe there are requests for
      a) the listserv just as it is
      b) a forum which would allow some folks to participate online
      c) a way to create a historical record of discussions by way of articles
      posted on the website.

We’re trying for a multi prong approach to all the requests.
      (a) the listserv isn’t going anywhere

      (b) I’ve created a forum using (BB2forum) in which the main category is
the mailing list. Anything posted in the maillist forum will be
forwarded through to the forum just as anything posted to the list will
end up being posted to the forum.
      https://www.pearson424.org/bb2forum

I haven’t had a chance to “pretty” up the forum page or give it the
      pearson424.org look and feel.
      (i) if/when you register for the forum, please use the email
address you use in the mailing list – it will make your message flow
back through to the list without intervention

      (c) I’ve also created an email address: articles
      at pearson424

If there a thread that you feel should be converted to an article, you
should forward one of the emails from that thread to
      articles at pearson424
. I’ll pick up whatever thread it comes from
and create a web page from the information.

      Thoughts? Discussion?

      Pat,

I’m not a big time surfer/messenger/blogger; not up to date on the terminology. What is the definition of a “forum” in
the sense that you’re using the term? What will happen there that doesn’t happen in the ordinary mail list we’ve been
      using?

      Thanks,

      Tor

      Take a look at:
      https://www.pearson424.org/bb2forum/index.php
      Click on Mail List link

You will see a mirror of this list. In other words, every email we send
will be posted online. Should someone prefer that format – they could
post in the forum instead of through and it would flow through to the
mail list as well. It will also be a fast way to see what’s going on if
you happen to be someplace away from your email.

      From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum: An *Internet forum*
is a web application for holding discussions and posting user generated
content. Internet forums are also commonly referred to as *Web forums*,
*message boards*, *discussion boards*, *(electronic) discussion groups*,
*discussion forums*, *bulletin boards*, /*fora*/ (the Latin
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin> plural) or simply *forums*. The
terms “forum” and “board” may refer to the entire community or to a
specific sub-forum dealing with a distinct topic. Messages within these
sub-forums are then displayed either in chronological order
      <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronological_order> or as threaded
      discussions <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threaded_discussion>.

I don’t believe (at this point) that anything additional will happen in
the forum. You don’t need to ever look at the forum if you prefer email.

Pat: Thanks for setting up the forum. A couple of things I have noticed on early postings.

I see there is a lag time between the e-mails being sent out and them showing up on the forum. As of 8 AM, Tor’s 7:30 AM response to you was not on the board yet. This lag could end up with responses posted via the 2 different methods out of sync. I don’t know how much flexibility you have on this time lag. However, as people see the benefit of the forum method and start responding there, this problem will be minimized.

A second one is that a times people respond to emails without erasing all of the history on the bottom. This is not such a big deal with an email, because you can just ignore the bottom of the email. However, I see that all of the history is being repeated each time as a quote, which of course is going to chew up a lot of space over time. Again, this problem will diminish as people switch over to the forum.

Looks really nice Pat. This covers all of the bases.

One thing – On the Google group forum web page, it indicated that “The author of this message requested that it not be archived. This message will be removed from Groups in 7 days” . I wonder whether the maillist has info in the header asking that messages are not archived.

I wonder whether the phpbb forum will honor that request and delete items after 7 days?

This reply is posted from the new forum.

Also, I will get rid of the Google forum.

There is a relatively significant amount of moderation overhead to maintaining these kinds of things and moderation creates delays in posting.

The list doesn’t allow posting from addresses it doesn’t know. The list is pretty dumb about addresses as upper and lower case changes are enough to screw it up. When people have noticed delays there, it was generally because I hadn’t released the email yet.

At the onset of the forum, I have chosen to be heavy handed on the moderation side again. Forums are notorious for spam issues and hacking and they are more public than a private email list where the address is not posted anywhere. All mail coming in and going out of the forum has to be approved, so if I’m not staring at my computer (which I am much of the day), the mail is delayed.

I thought email from the forum would just flow through to the list if the addresses were the same. Another issue that I’m seeing is duplicate posting between the forum and the maillist ( if an email comes from the list the forum tries to send it back to the list ). So it turns out that email in both directions have to be approved.

All that said, I expect the delays will shorten as I tweak settings and we get a few more moderators

ps I’ve been removing the previous posts from the email that comes from list – while i seem to have found the code to remove most email addresses my email address keeps coming through.

I have obviously missed something while away. Can someone point me to the new forum please?

Pat, Thanks. The forum will make it a lot simpler and cleaner to search for historical information, and reduced the number of times that generous contributors spend reviewing topics for memory-afflicted (like myself) or new members. I’d like to ask, however, if, given the public nature of this forum, that these email addressess are going to be “harvested” for later inclusion in someones spamming attempts. …sv/ Silver Girl

Did you find an exposed email address? I hope not- but that doesn’t mean I’ve caught them all. I’ve been pretty careful to make sure they aren’t there.

      Pat,

There is a flip side to that coin,. Until now we all had the option of emailing each other directly to discuss something privately, without bothering the entire group with the conversation. It seems we won’t have that option anymore, since our direct email addresses must be deleted from forum postings, right?

There is always an option in the forum to send a “private message” to any other user.
