ParticipantHello all
Today was the day. I went to Deaton’s and Gary who has been a patient teacher through this whole process took Lori and I out for an engine test. We ran the new engine through it’s paces. I was on a tight time table, I have to figure out how to retire like some of you guys, my initial impression was that the engine vibrated more than the W60 at low rpm’s. Gary adjusted the idle and helped the vibration but it was still more than the old engine. He said that the new engine bed is much stiffer and transmits the vibrations through out the hull. At full throttle the wheel pulled like I never felt before (I’ve been wondering what you guys have been talking about) and I could have pulled a skier. I have more power than I need and I think that the vibration may have seemed worse because the engine box and cover were not in place. The louder engine sounds may have made it seem like things were worse than they were. I think that the boat actually backed better than usual, but we were on the bottom when trying to back into the slip. I don’t know how fouled the prop is but it must not be to bad judging by the speed that we were able to reach. We just went out into the river about a mile then back to the house so it was not much of a sea trial but I didn’t have much time. It will be a few weeks before I can get a day to check the whole setup out. I will get back with actual numbers: speed and rpm’s and probably a few questions for the board if they are not all out sailing.
Happy days
Linus

Congratulations on your new engine. I’m sure you’ll be happy with your investment. For comparison, my Yanmar runs relatively smoothly at all speeds. If I stand on the cabin sole next to the engine, I can feel vibration in the soles of my feet at cruising speed. Anywhere else in the boat it runs with little vibration.
With the engine cover on, it is also quiet. I had to play with the V-drive alignment to get the drive-train to run smoothly. I tweeked the alignment about a half-dozen times until I got it right. If you find that your engine runs rough in gear, but smooth in neutral, you might look at your alignment and running gear.
