      Rich and the group:

I’ll be out in East Hampton on Friday, July 25 at mid day. I’ll get out to
the anchorage Friday afternoon. Hopefully many will arrive on Friday, but
      Saturday is fine also.

Why don’t we all use channel 73 as our party line. This weekend I will get
some coordinates as to where we will try and anchor. There is tons of room
in the harbor, so we should have absolutely no problem rafting, or, if the
weather turns, splitting up and anchoring individually, all nearby one
another. Holding is excellent in sand with 10-12 ft depths.

Also, I will get the buoy number where the turn west can be made out of the
channel into the anchorage. As mentioned before, there is a bar that runs
north and south on the west side of the marked channel, and you need to get
far enough south of it before turning west. It’s all sand, but you can get
      hung up.

Let’s address Richard’s thoughts on dining. If we go to a restaurant as a
group with a fixed price, that price would probably be around $30-$35 per
person without liquor. If most would rather eat aboard or have a BBQ on
shore, let me know. Those who want to eat out can always go to one of at
least 3 restaurants right on the harbor. I will try and see if we can get
space to grill and eat at my marina, Maidstone Harbor Marina. Perhaps
Thatcher Stone can check availability of bbq facilities at East Hampton
Point, immediately south of MAidstone Harbor.

Three Mile offers everything for a great get-together. There is fuel
(diesel and gas for o/b), boat yards(3 of them) with haul out and mechanics
, sandy beaches where we can all dinghy over to and hang out, and
restaurants. The only thing we don’t have at the harbor is a grocery store.
Be sure to bring what you need in the way of food and drinks. There is a
town pump-out boat also offering free pump outs that comes out to the
      anchorage.

The last Pearson rendezvous I attended was in the 80’s hosted by Pearson
Yachts at Newport Yachting Center. I am looking forward to seeing all the
424’s and meeting all the BB members!

I'll probably either be there Friday morning (if I leave Thursday night) or Friday night if I leave Friday morning – I have to check the tides and see what's best. It's a 13-14 hour trip for me.

Anyway, I think flexibility is the key – the fact of the matter is that we may not like each other that much. Or, we may find there are several groups with like interests in food or partying. I have absolutely no problem with rafting and having a great big party (pot luck, of course). However, that said, I'm down with anything anyone wants to do as long as it doesn't involve bodily harm.

I’m leaving on the 18th. I’ll take my time gunk-holing my way down the coast to LI. Depending on the weather, I might get there a day or two early. If anyone else gets there early, please keep an eye out for me. I probably won’t have my radio on, but my cell always works.

I’m leaving from Beverly, MA. This is North of Boston. I figure it will take me 5 days to get there, so I’ll probably leave on Saturday or Sunday. This gives me a day or two of slack in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. I don’t mind getting there early. I have 5 weeks to cruise this year. I don’t know where I’ll endup after the rendezvous, I might head down to NY city, for a few days and then head east to the cape.

Don’t turn right out of the channel until you have passed red bouy number 24, but check charts for your boat. RB #24 is North of East Hampton Point marina ( on the left) and appears as you approach Shagwong marina ( on the left) 250 yards beyond EHP.

Looks as though it will be just Dolores and me on our boat. We plan to
arrive on Friday afternoon. Our preferences for dining are similar to those
expressed by Rich Carter (BBQ and/or Pot-luck) but we are prepared to join
the gang if most opt for a restaurant on one of the evenings. All are
welcome to contact us on our cell phone @ (401)-440-7044.

      ok, Gotcha Norris!

As far as the dining, I favor the idea of a BBQ where everyone brings his own dinner and we all sit together and gam. I have an open, grassy area located at my marina, Maidstone Harbor Marina, that has picnic tables that seat about 20, and I could arrange more tables and seating if that is what is wanted. That could be the Saturday eve dinner. Friday nite could be dinner on the boats in the anchorage, pot luck.

Please, everyone let me know your preferences. Thatcher is correct stating that there are indeed great restaurants in E Hampton, but I think most of us are more interested in hanging on the boats and staying out of the more crowded and certainly more expensive restaurants. The rendezvous that I have attended in the past (Pearson and Hinckley) all had low key dining and stressed the interchange between owners.

I also thought that a list of subjects to be discussed might be fun. Maybe we don’t need a formal list, but I thought that especially for our newer 424 owners, some of the subjects might include W58 and W60 maintenance, fuel tank issues, rigging replacement options, travelers, interior lighting, batteries and charging systems, fresh water systems and fittings, steering maintenance, porthole replacement, refrigeration, electronics, etc.

Perhaps Rich and myself could run many of these as informal discussions with help from all?? I know we all have common issues with the 424’s and this would be a great opportunity to discuss them and actually see what other owners have done to upgrade their boats.

As for the anchorage, Thatcher recommends turning west at buoy “24”; That’s fine, but if you turn at “22” that is just as good. Either one will work and take you into safe water from the north/south running channel.

I recommend that we raft up, weather permitting, so everyone should be sure and bring 2 or 3 good sized fenders and lines. If the weather turns windy, we can break up and anchor individually close by one another and still get on many boats.

      Keep the feed back coming.

      Rod,
Your proposed Saturday, and Friday dining arrangements sound great to me.
In addition to Dolores and me it now appears that we will have son-in-law Mark Raes and granddaughter Eliana (age five) with us.
Your ideas concerning discussion of improvements etc, sound fine. I will be interested in seeing first-hand the re-powering projects as well as other improvements. I can offer a look at my windlass installation and alternator/battery arrangement.

Rod I agree with you about Maidtone. EHP isn’t giving me an answer so I’m out of ideas. I like yours but for where will all the dinghies go to get to Maidstone ? If they come back to me I’ll so advise.

My only point in responding to Rich was that there are plenty of top quality places to dine very close by. Particularly if the weather is inclement.

Agree that dinks landing at Maidstone MArina could be tricky. I will check
and see what I can arrange with Dockmaster. If you would check with EHP and
see if they might allow any to land at their Dink dock that would be great.
      Please let me know.

      Hi All,

In the event we do need to land, I have a 10.5' inflatable that can hold 1600 pounds. Or so it says. That's 10-160 lb sailors, or 8 of me. Since I'm only one of me, that leaves 6 or 7 others. A few dinks of that nature could do the job. I suppose I'll have to see if my engine runs…

I’m most interested in meeting the folks that I’ve exchanged email with over the years. One would think that we almost know each other by now, but I must confess that I sometimes get confused as to who I am exchanging messages with. Once we meet and get on a first-name basis, it will be easier.

I’m also interested in seeing projects that folks have completed on their boats. I’m sure we all want to share notes. It’s interesting to see how each of us have looked at similar problems and found different solutions. I understand that all of us may not have the time or desire to get into customizing our boats, so if your boat is still stock, please don’t feel left out.

I’m of course pleased to show off some of my projects. I’ve put a lot of work into the boat over the years. If anyone is interested in getting down to nuts-and-bolts of how some of these were completed, I’d be happy to spend the time. I’ve repaired or replaced every part of the boat over the years. If anyone has a particular problem, I’d be happy to give a look. There are others in the group who are equally proud of their work and I’m sure that they would like the opportunity to do the same.

Weather permitting, we will surely raft. The last time we did this, I dropped a Fortress FX-85. This is a huge danforth type anchor. It would have held us all even in a moderate blow, but everyone understandably insisted on dropping his own hook. We had a dozen anchors down there. Had the wind shifted while we were tied together, it would have been very difficult to untangle the ground tackle. Let’s see what the weather report is when we get there and discuss it over a beverage. I suggest that we stick to the one anchor solution until after we’ve discussed it.

      Rich (and the Group:)

Sounds like you’ll be the first on scene and will drop that big boy in 12 ft. ! Everyone will then raft up and we’ll keep an eye on the wx. Try and anchor to the north (and just west of the mooring field) after you turn west so we’ll be closer to the Marina and beach. Don’t turn until you hit buoy “22”.

I have confirmed with my Marina that we have an area available to us for dinner and BBQ. I am awaiting dinghy dock info. There is a nice beach just to the east as you enter the breakwater where we can all gather for lunch if we so desire.

Again I want to remind the group to bring provisions with you!! There are no grocery stores at the harbor. If necessary I could always drive to a nearby market, but I’d prefer not to have to. There is ice available from my marina and the others.

After our BBQ we can certainly go into the nearby restaurant and hang at the bar for those that wish to, or return to the anchorage.

As for discussions we certainly have no lack of material, what with our boats being as old as they are! It will be great to see what everyone has done.

Without making things complicated or imposing on
anyone , what kind of arrangements could someone make
      that cannot bring the boat?
I was thinking of driving to Conn., taking the ferry
      and meeting up.
I haven’t seen any nearby hotels. I thought I saw
someone else on here that was doing the same thing.

Not sure what to tell you on this one. Nearest motel in town is The Dutch

      Rich,
Thanks for the offer. I am still not sure if we’ll be
able to drive down. Kodak offered a voluntary
separation program this week, and it looks like I
might be retired by August 1st. if I decide to take
it. So plans right now are up in the air.
