      Guys

I need a little help. I have had a leak in the aft of the boat for years. I found the PVC pipe that was used to connect the hose to the clamshell vents on the aft deck was split to allow it to be compressed to fit the hole. Over the years it had begun to leak. When I removed them I had to dig out a few inches of core and fill with epoxy. I made new PVC and used 5200 to seal and glue it in place. I am used to using 5200 where there no chance of tooling it to give it a smooth appearance. I tried to use a gloved finger with lacquer thinner with limited success. Is there a better way? Or is it just impossible and just one of the risks of using 5200?

      Linus:

I applied some 5200 this weekend and just used my bare finger to smooth it
out, which worked well. You just need a good supply of paper towels to wipe
your finger right away. There may be a better way though.

Because of things like this, I think the best thing you could buy a boat owner is a box of nitrile gloves. 🙂

+1 on the nitrile gloves. I go through a box every 6 months.
Another good thing to have around is a lot of vinegar. I'm not sure how it works on 5200, but vinegar cleans uncured epoxy off your hands and tools with none of the problems that acetone and other petroleum solvents produce.

Use 3Mâ„¢ General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, 8984, 1 Quart to remove 5200.

Just used a nitrel glove and some laquer thinner. I’ll have to see which one turned out better, the one that I smoothed out or the one that I left alone to cure.
      Thanks for the input.
