I hand-scanned and uploaded the Owner’s Manual, Parts Catalog and Gift Catalog for all to have if you want them.
I’m working on the Westerbeke 58 and Velvet Drive manuals as well. I’m hoping those I can scan at work on the copier (saving me many hours).
Enjoy!

ParticipantVery cool! Nice to have the sizes of the parts, even though we can’t buy them anymore from Pearson ( esp. at those prices).

The Warner Velvet Drive Transmission 70C 71C Service Manual is now posted.
I just realized how faint that owner’s manual came out. I’ll have to redo that one.

john stevensonParticipantPatrick,
Let me add my thanks for your scanning these documents. With my re-power I now have a Velvet Drive tranny and the problem of the propeller free-wheeling under sail. Withe Paragon tranny I just had to shut down the engine in gear and the Maxprop would feather. That is not an option with the V-D. I was very interested to see the statement in the manual that free-wheeling is not a problem under sail or at trollng speeds. Of course this is just the opposite of what all the experts advise so I'm not ready to just ignore the problem, but I sure don't want to have to add a shaft brake. I have questions into my installer and the V-D people on this issue.John

ModeratorHi John,
I have the W58 and Velvet Drive and it does indeed freewheel with no problem – to be honest, rather than stop it, I want to use it to generate power. There is a company that makes the self-regulated (and programmable) alternator that needs an 8″ pulley on the propeller shaft.
That's the way I'm going.

john stevensonParticipantBob,
Good to hear you don't see a problem. I'm not interested at the moment in using the prop to generated electricity, just avoid equipment failure. Of course if I just let the prop freewheel I've negated much of the value of the Maxprop I installed back in 2003. Not the first time I've been overcome by events.Jone

I’m surprised to hear that free-wheeling is a problem with a Maxprop and Velvet Drive. Until a few months ago I had a Luke feathering prop. with a Velvet Drive that had been on the boat since 1988 and never had that problem. With the engine shut down and the shift lever in any position the prop feathered and the shaft did not rotate. My first indication of prop failure occurred one day when the shaft started to rotate under sail. Shortly thereafter I learned that the blade angles would no longer synchronize and the prop had to be replaced with the original fixed prop (which, of course, free-wheels all the time). The prop failure was a rather traumatic experience, with two incidences of not being able to slow the boat down when approaching docks (disaster averted by people being quick with lines) and the cost of hauling the boat twice before the cause of the problem was confirmed.
I’m undecided what to do for the future. I really liked the feathering prop when it was working correctly but the reliability of a fixed prop is certainly comforting for someone who has been through the experiences I had when the feathering prop failed.
Viewpoints welcomed.

ModeratorHi John,
If your MaxProp is working correctly, you don't need a permanent shaft brake but something that will drag on the shaft with the engine off – A simple belt brake would work, but that adds complexity.
Phillipe, I'm sorry for your loss… But it points out what I've often said – I don't want things that multiple parts that can fail underwater. A folding or feathering prop presents, to me anyway, a horribly complicated and delicate point of failure. It's really hard to break a fixed prop (although even that is possible).
If I could make everything as simple and bulletproof as a fixed prop, I'd be a happy camper.
Oh, wait. I am already a happy camper!
