I’m reading through all those manuals I scanned and I thought I was going to find more zincs in the system. Is there really only the one one in the Heat Exchanger and the ones on the prop?
Checking these and replacing would be a good thing to add to that Winterizing list that went out today.
Thanks,

john stevensonParticipantPatrick,
Unless you have a generator or a seawater cooled refrigerator condensor that should be about it.
In addition to the one on my Maxprop I also put one on the shaft.John

Participantbtw I drop a “fish” – a zinc on a cord attached to a bonding wire (10 ga) when I’m near a suspected electrical field, marina, etc.

We added a fish too. WE had to do a non-planned haul-out about 3 weeks ago and while we were capping the thru-hull which woudl not close we also saw our 6 month old zincs were ready to be replaced. We added a fish we hang from stern and clip to the mizzen shroud.
That haul-out taught a couple of things:
1) 6 months on our zincs for Shilshole Bay Marina
2) Hanging in the sling overnight is a great way to get some work done at the cheapest haul-out fee
3) Those wooden plugs are handy 🙂You can read about our mild excitement which lead to the haul-out in the blog: http://www.deepplaya.com/post/Mild-Excitement-tonight.aspx

What kind of zincs do you use? I found that the cheap stuff sold in most marine outlets won’t last. The problem is that when the zinc starts to wear, the fasteners that hold it to the shaft will loosen up and allow the zinc to spin off the shaft. You can frequently hear it when spins off, there’s a thunk on the bottom of the boat as it hits the hull on the way to the bottom. I’ve used more expensive zincs for the past few years and haven’t lost one in years. The zinc is attached to a bronze or brass collar. As the zinc wears, it stays fastened tightly to the shaft until all the zinc is used. I’ve even gotten more than one year on a zinc. The brand I use is Godfrey, sold at most prop shops. They are expensive, but it’s cheap insurance.—

They were the zincs sold to me by SeaView, just standard two piece held together with Allen bolts. The ones which were bad hadn’t fallen off, they were just ready to be replaced. I assumed they’ make it a year. I now know 6 months is the norm at my marina which has a lot of liveaboards, I think like 15% or so. Lots of people have a diver do their shaft zincs. I’ll probably do the same.
I’ll look into those zincs though, they sound pretty cool.
