ModeratorHi Adam,
Zinc chromate is extremely toxic. I know because I got heavy metal poisoning with it when I was in the employ of the government (U.S. Navy). Be very careful when using it and make sure you use it in a well ventilated area.
The big question is why you'd use it on your anchor chain and for that matter, why the heat exchanger? Bronze is inherently non corroding and the anchor chain should be galvanized or zinc plated. If you prime with it, you have to paint over it because its mechanical properties do not provide very good abrasion resistance.
Better bet for the heat exchanger is Krylon, the new Rustoleum or any decent engine paint.
But that's only my two cents.

I used it to prime the hood of my ’77 land cruiser. My friends in the paint business called it yellow death. They make a less toxic self etching primer now. The land cruiser I did ten years ago it still looks great. I used the new stuff on the new fuel tank installed last year. I guess only time will tell. The application was about the same and the paint guys say it works just as good.
Are you talking about using on the inside of the heat exchanger?Linus

ParticipantPer the advice of my chelated colleague, I am sticking with bicycle/go-kart paint from Mo’s Hardware. (Westerbeke red for the head and hot parts, yucko green for the cooling system) Its the outside canister of a sen dure heat exchanger that I am painting. The insides get chunk removal treatment and a bath of warm muriatic acid. As for the anchor chain, it has a rusty stretch (the part that went in the warm salt water) and I wanted to baby a few extra years out of it.
