      Hello all,

Has anyone changed the plastic in the 4 aft ports, rather than changing the entire port?  I don't know if this can be done, but it looks like it's just a gasket holding the plastic in place.  If it could be done and replaced with tempered glass cut to size, it would certainly be cheaper and less hassle.

      Has anyone explored this possibility?

      Jack,
I don't think I have any plastic in any of my ports.  Not sure which 4 aft ports you are talking about.  Pearson and POs changed a lot on these boats over the years.  Maybe you should identify what type of ports you have that you want to change.

My aft ports are fixed, glass in aluminum frames with a gasket seal.

Sorry for the unclarity of my post.  Xanadu IV is a 1981 ketch with, I believe six original Bomar plastic ports in the V berth and the salon.  The ones in the galley, aft berth, head and shower are metal framed, opening ports that I believe are Bomar also with plastic lenses that are all foggy.  The ones that I'm referring to are the galley, aft berth, head and shower ports.  I think that all of the ports on Xanadu IV are original.

I ordered new plastic replacement lens and have replaced two. It’s a good project for a rainy day.You could just as easily remove a lens and have a tempered glass one cut to size. You have to remove all the old sealant from the frame and using sealant caulk the new one inplace-kind of messy.Being lazy 2 of the lens cleaned up pretty well with brass and metal polish.

Search the archive for porthole and you’ll see a bunch of info about the ports I ordered from New Found Metals.

I looked at my boat today, and I don’t think I want to put the 8″ port in the shower. Way too big. I’ll use the 6×20 on the other 3 like Patrick, and use the 3×17 in the shower stall. I’ll add some epoxy to fill in the cutout a little bit so it has more to bite on.

It was an easy project… I re-glazed mine with new plastic. The
plastic is just in with silicon. (Use the higher grade grade made for
the purpose). I did all the work with the ports in place. Once the
plastic was out, I sanded, primed, masked, and painted the frames. I
made a “tunnel” of plastic drop cloth around each and sprayed them in
place. Remask the frame and plastic when the paint has dried
(overnight) and then just silicon in the new plastic. Use the old
plastic and a router bit with a guide bearing to cut the new plastic the
same size as the old. Stock gasket material from Defender (make the
seam at the top) and the ports are like new. By the way, I left the old
cloudy plastic in the head for privacy.

Yes, they can be replaced. I suggest contacting Bowmar for the proper gasket material. I’m pretty sure they are still in business.
