I’m going to put in a garboard drain plug while I’m on the hard. I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on why
one make/model might be better than another. Also, which seems likely to survive longer, stainless or bronze?
      Any experiences, good or bad?

You can never go wrong using good US or English silicon bronze (make sure it’s not the cheaper Chinese stuff). Although Stainless has a better passive reading, if it is starved for oxygen it will turn active and give about the same protection as cast iron. As you know 316 is the best in most cases.

Thanks, Don. West Marine (Port Supply) sells a bronze Perko plug that seems suitable. No idea where it’s manufactured, though. I suppose I could ask Perko.

      Hi Tor,

Be careful – especially with Perko.  Call Roger at Bristol Bronze (401-625-5224) who is not only a maven with bronze, but probably can tell you who makes a true bronze garboard plug.

Typically, Perko stuff has a lot of zinc in it, which as we all know, is sacrificial.  Silicon bronze doesn't have any and tends to be a richer hue than the stuff Perko makes – Just be careful is all I'm saying.
