SpectatorAnyone recently ordered a starter solenoid and have a compatible part number handy?
The Westerbeke PN in the parts manual for the W58 is 23338.My screwdriver is had to go to to work again, so I figure its time to just replace the thing.
Thanks,

Torresen Marine Inc has one for $69.63 (part #23338) at the following link:My starter on my (W60) look like a Delco Remy (GM). You may be able to take solenoid to a NAPA parts store and get a replacment.

ParticipantIf you Google “ARCO 12101” you can find it for $300, or so. I’ll bet the same is true of the solinoid.

Find yourself a good auto electric rebuild shop. The one in our town
has been around for over 50 years. The old fellows there can match-up
anything, mostly by sight. While you are at it, have them open the end
of the starter and check the brushes.Pete

I needed t o replace mine last year. I don’t have the typical Westerbeke 60 but the solenoid was around $300 anywhere I looked. None of the auto parts stores could find a match for. I took it into the local starter/alternator shop and his only question was if it was 12 or 24 volt. He never took more then a 5 second glance at it. He walked out of the back room with the exact same for $48 + tax. Defiantly check at a repair shop. He has since rebuilt my Balmar alternator.

SpectatorHey what do you know the one I have already is a Delco, now if I can just get it off.
Top right bolt one only needed some PB Blaster and the Knipex pliers. Not sure what size it was, but metric and standard would have stripped that bolt.
Bottom right bolt needed some heat gun and the PB Blaster and the Knipex Pliers.
Top left bolt is one its second round of heat and PB Blaster.. hopefully twice is the charm!I learned about the Knipex pliers from Brion Toss. LOVE THEM!!
Hopefully I’ll get some sleep tonight and then I’m taking the starter down to Blanchard Auto Electric here in Seattle which is where my local Westerbeke dealer said they send their starters. I thought that was nice to not withhold that just so they could get a cut.
You know me, I’ll have pics and all later. 😉

I looked at the Knipex web page. What is the hook? I don’t see anything different about the pliers. Are there some specialized ones that I missed? I love a new tool to play with, I can’t seem to get the boat out of the slip might as well play with my tools.

ParticipantI discovered knipex pliers about 8 years ago while repairing my father in law’s exploded plumbing. Crazy Rockwell hardness and with an angled jaw design. You can put them on a steel pipe and stand on them.

Which of the many models of Knipex pliers appeals to you?

SpectatorOk, I got the starter off. The last bolt needed a 10” socket extension to be reached and only a 14mm socket fit well enough to hold.
Pics of the starter on flickr. I’m thinking it might not be salvageable, I’ll drop it off tomorrow and find out I guess. After the bolts were I used a putty knife and a ball peen hammer to work a bit of a gap between the starter and the block, then I used a screwdriver in that small gap and the hammer to get it off. I used a liberal amount of PB Blaster and the heat gun for a bit before the final assault with the socket.

Just came across this posting. Worth reading regarding solenoids and
starters:http://www.deepplaya.com/post/My-Little-Friend-the-Starter-Motor.aspx

SpectatorThat’s from my blog. 😉
The starter works perfectly now. As part of it I decided to replace one of the ground wires which was attached to base of the V-Drive. I also decided to replace the one connecting the v-drive to the raw water strainer. The raw water strainer bolt broke off at the base so I pulled it out completely and replaced it as well. It needed it, I hadn’t planned on doing it today though. 😉
Anyway, everything is starting nicely and water is flowing cleanly. Yay !
