I’m planning to set sail in a few days from the St. John’s River (NE FL) towards Beaufort, NC. This being a
first-time shakedown for Silver Heels (and me!) after her little 2½ year refit, I’ll start out in the ICW.
Once I’ve determined things are pretty much functioning as they should, I’ll see about scooting out an inlet
for a coastal hop. (The offshore legs begin in the fall.)

Would like to hear from you owners with boats based between Jacksonville, FL and Beaufort, NC. If there’s a
decent anchorage near you (my cruising budget doesn’t include many marina overnights), maybe I’ll stop by and
we can swap boat tours. Mine comes with a cold, green-bottled beer after 5.

If you make it up the waterway as far as Oriental I can provide a slip and a
bike to get around town or you can find a spot at the town dock that is free
but sometime hard to get to. If you won’t make it that far let me know
maybe I can meet you in Beaufort for a tour and a beer.
The light house at Cape Lookout is a couple hours out of Beaufort inlet.
The beaches are as nice as any in the world, it’s a national seashore and
holding is usually good. Ocracoke Island is reminiscent of Old Key West
before the invasion and if you come up this far is a couple of hours out of
the way but it is great. The channel can be tricky but usually there is a
ferry that you can follow in. There are National Park docks near the ferry
terminal with a nice bath house that are very reasonable.

      Tor,
I plan to depart from Southport, NC tomorrow heading up the ICW toward Beaufort, then probably the Chesapeake.

      John,

I’m going to take my time getting to Beaufort, but am not planning any long stopovers en route, either. So I should be there well before July 4th. Will probably go on up to the Chesapeake a month or two later, depending. Sounds like you’ll be well ahead of me, but perhaps we’ll cross paths. Hope so!

Thanks, Linus. I’ll let you know when I’m in Beaufort. Aiming to arrive before July 4th, and since I have friends there I’ll probably hang around for a while. Will plan to stop at Oriental next. Your kind offer of a slip is most welcome. As for a bike, I’ve just had the local machine shop here slice my old Trek mountain bike in half and weld on hinges & joint bolts – an original, rough but serviceable folding bike conversion. So far it seems to be working perfectly! So hopefully I’ll have my own bike with me.

As for Cape Lookout, I’ve been to Beaufort and environs many times over the years. Visited Ocracoke only once about 20 years ago (which is also the last time I visited Oriental). At that time and pre-season, the Ocracoke National Park docks were free!

      Will be in touch.

      Tor,
I have been taking long stopovers (just finishing 4 days in Southport – didn't leave today as planned).  So there's a good chance you may overtake me.  I expect to move quickly past Beaufort (one of my least favorite stopover ports) up to the Oriental area.  I will spend several days in that area looking for a winter berth, then probably move on to the Chesapeake.  Once in the Chesapeake I'll likely stop in the Solomons area before heading south.  I have 3 friends each with a dock I can use on the Patuxent.  I expect to be heading back south in September.

      Tor,
If you are planned to jump off-shore for your trip north be sure to watch the tropical storm forecast to form between Cuba and the Bahamas late this week.  The consensus forecast seems to send this storm well off-shore, but I've never before heard a NOAA forecaster use the term “Catawampus” in describing the lack of correlation between the various models.  It appears this storm (if it even materializes) could probably go anywhere.

John, we are just up the river and across from Oriental, Mathews Point Marina in Clubfoot Creek. Vic Copland (Gigi’s Island) gave me copies of the DVD’s when he was here last week but we have not watched them yet. What months are you looking for a berth. We have an empty slip next to us at present.

      Dale,
Sounds like I should give Mathews Pt. a call.  I had planned to wait until I got in the immediate area and check out the place.  Vic recommended the marina so I planned to give it a try.  I'll probably be in the area in about 4 days.

If you make it to Oriental let me know. The same space is available if you don’t jump off shore from Beaufort.

      John,

I do hope we get to meet up, but it seems we’ll just have to take that as it comes. My summer “cruising itinerary” is vague at best, entirely subject to the whims of the wind. If some pretty lady says Azores, I could be gone.

Thanks for the warning about TS Catawampus. I’ll keep an eye on her. As I write I’m watching a low spinning just a few miles to the northwest of Jacksonville. In any case, I don’t plan to go offshore the first leg of my sail from the St. John’s to Beaufort simply because the boat is entirely new to me underway at this point. So much new equipment, so many renovated systems, nearly all self-installed and therefore subject to all kinds of surprises. Maybe the second half of the trip I’ll find an inlet (or would that be an outlet?) and go for a real sail. We’ll see.

      Reef early,

      Tor
