ParticipantHas anyone with a Westerbeke 58 added an auto oil change gizmo? If so, which one? Any guidance? I haven’t crawled “down under” yet and am making the blind assumption that there is a drain plug under the engine. This project has slithered up my punch list.

SpectatorMy PO had added a hose to the bottom of the oil pan which was slightly more useful and probably just as messy as going in with a pump into the dipstick. The connection point for that is on the starboard side of the engine.
Here’s a shot of the end of that hose: http://www.flickr.com/photos/deepplaya/3260788951/-p

ModeratorHi,
The PO didn't add it. Westerbeke did. It's a 3/8″ MPT fitting. You can attach it to almost anything. I'm thinking of adding an electric pump but for now use a hand pump.

ParticipantDan, the Oil Boy uses vacuum to pull the warm oil out. It works great. It has a float that prevents it from overfilling. Once you pump it, creating the vacuum it continues to draw for a few minutes. The tube enters the oil sump via the dipstick hole. I join two of the tubes together creating an arc that allows the extractor to sit next to the engine. It has a pour spout. Simple, well made, very effective.

There is an ad on e-bay for an engine that claims to be a W58 and also
calls it a Perkins 4.154 200Is the W58 a Perkins 4.154 200? I had heard it was a Mitsubishi
Industrial engine, but still have not found anyone who knows the
Mitsubishi model number.Thanks,
PEte

ParticipantPete-
The design is by Mazda, licensed to Perkins who used it for commercial, tractor and marine engines, but modified the Mazda design. Westerbeke bought base engines from Perkins and did their own marine conversion. There is some question of part compatability, including the head assembly between the Perkins and the Westerbeke.
I have a dissembled W-58 in the garage. One interesting thing is that the head gasket shown in the W-58 Parts List is for the W-52, and vice versa.
It looks like the W-52 and W-58 do not use the same injectors. I’ve not seen a Perkins 4-154.

Any idea on the compatibility of the oil pan gasket?

ParticipantHi Pete-
No idea on the oil pan gasket. However, I did get a Mazda 4-154 gasket set off Ebay and nothing fit the W-58. The W-58 oil pan gasket is not obscenely expensive.
The rear bearing seal is the same problematic design as the W-50 (4-108) and they use the same W part. Foley claims to have a better seal but for a lot of money. Has anyone tried it?

In my mind ~$80 for an oil pan gasket is silliness and that is what I am
seeing.quent wrote:
