I’ve installed a 75hp Yanmar. After having three years to evaluate the installation, I can say that the engine is overkill. There is almost no case when I’ve needed 75hp. A 65hp engine is probably more than enough. There is one advantage to being overpowered. I can run the engine at a moderate power setting and get hull speed. This means that the engine is running quietly. Given that the engine was only about half the cost of my repower, I don’t feel that I wasted the extra expense of the turbo model.

The engine bed method that I used worked well. I cut off the top flange of the old engine bed leaving just the vertical sides of the pan. The deformation of the old pan was where the top flange flares out. Since I cut this off, I removed the problem. I did all the work myself, so anything that made the job simpler was important. Making a new glass pan would have been a lot of work and I’m not all that confident on my glasswork. Retrofitting with a steel flange was fairly simple.

TAD takes the generic cummins engine and marinizes it. I’m not sure what this entails. They certainly add a heat exchanger and seawater pump. These items can be added by you with little effort and moderate expense. They may modify the high pressure pump. I suggest contacting cummins directly and asking them. Don’t bother talking with TAD. The guy who runs the business isn’t very helpful.

BTW: found this at Harbor Freight. Looks interesting.
