I use a Heart inverter/charger that I bought 23 years ago. Still runs like a champ and runs my micowave though its not hot enough to make popcorn. The inverter is 1000w and the charger is 50A. I think Xantrex bought them out however so you may wish to avoid them.
If the unit was water damaged and the circuit card was damaged beyond repair, their assertion that the unit was not repairable is probably fair. In good faith, I would expect to have the diagnostic fee returned however and an offer to return ship the unit (at your cost). This is the cost of doing business. Please feel free to forward my comment to them if you wish.
These things come up on ebay frequently.

If I were to do it again, I’d be looking for a charger/inverter that produced a true sine-wave. The modified sine-wave won’t run my microwave as hot as it should. I run my engine whenever I use the microwave. Otherwise the 12v bus droops and the microwave doesn’t work well at all (and my batteries die). I modified my inverter by installing a relay across the on/off switch. Whenever the engine starts, the inverter comes on automatically. There’s an override switch remotely mounted to override the ignition key and either turn the inverter on or off regardless of key position. The modification was trivial.
The charger comes on automatically whenever the inverter sees 115v shore power.
