      Hi Folks,

Reality check – This winters projcet is dingy davits with a solar pannel mounted – looking at the keyocera KC130.
One of the things I have been mulling over is mounting a travler atop the davits for the mizzen. I know this is a relatively small sail but it is amazing how much boom lift and twist. Wondering if the few hundred bucks is worht it.

      Any thoughts?

I have a sloop, so I can’t comment with first-hand experience. I think you’d need a pretty solid set of davits to survive the dynamic load caused by an accidental gybe. What do you plan for davits?

      Accidental gybe? never….
I am looking at Garhauer 1-1/4dia 316 SS, mounted to both hull and stern pulpit. Since the davits will be tied into the structure that the boom is currently controled from I figured It would be strong enough to handel the load.

Not being a mizzen sail expert, not sure a travelor adds much benefit to the sail.I added a radar arch with davits to my ketch rig[also to add solar panels].At the top radar arch[davit bar],I secured and connected a sheet to the mizzen boom with pullies. From there the sheet runs thru the mizzen boom and down the mast.To sheet in the mizzen sail, pull down on the sheet at the mast.To let out the sail, let out the sheet then cleat when desired sail set is achieved.Eliminated all the rigging and hardware at the back of the boat and cleaned it up-works great.

Eric, our ketch rig has mainsheet attached to stern pulpit. It appear to have very little load at 20 knot winds, so your idea should be fine if davits are sound. Do you have roller furling mizzin mast?

      Thanks Adam,
No roller furling, one deep reef point on the sail mostly.
We were out this weekend off Isle of Shoals (Maine / NH border) with gusts to 40mph running jib and jigger – hit sog of 9.2kt.
Even in that wind could handel the full mizzen with the current 3:1 sten pulpit mounted sheet. I have to believe that if I do a good job mounting davits the load will be acceptible.
