ParticipantTor,
My plan at this point is not to repower but rather to pull the engine
and check it out (plastigauge the bearings, etc). It runs strong.
Needs a good bath and painting plus a little better organizing (hoses,
oil filter, wires, oil drain pump). I picked up a set of gaskets for
$100, so I am set to take a look see at the bearings. I have done many
engine rebuilds over the years and despite the price of Westerbeke
parts, still think this may be the way for me to go. The internal parts
can be had as perkins parts from my understanding.Nonetheless, I am always in the market for good spare parts for my W-58.

*Here’s something to consider when you re-power. While the original
Westerbeke was still in my boat and running, I ran a couple of ads
online advertising it for sale. Some guy came by to inspect it and see
it run, which it still did admirably, and bought it on the spot for
$1,800. A couple of weeks later, when it was pulled in preparation for
putting in the new Yanmar, he came by the shop with a pickup truck and
the mechanic simply lowered the old engine from the boat into the
truck bed and away it went. *

*Granted, $1,800 is only 10-or-12% of the cost of the new engine, but
it sure beats most other means of disposal. The trick is to show &
sell it while it’s still in the boat so they can see that it runs (and
doesn’t smoke, etc). Much easier than selling it when it’s sitting on
cinder blocks alongside the garage.**T**or

Pete,
Yours is the better solution for someone with lots more mechanical abilities than I possess. I believe I could learn to rebuild an engine, and I know I’d enjoy it. There just aren’t enough years in a lifetime right now, considering I had the whole rest of the boat to make over, which has already taken 3 years (& counting), and maybe even see if I could squeeze in a bit of sailing.
Have fun! Nothing else could possibly justify what we do for these old boats.
Tor
