ParticipantHello, fellow 424 owners,
I've been rather absent for quite a while….have over 800 emails to review on this list. In fact, I've not had much chance to attack boat projects, either, due to family commitments.
But one that stays high on the project list is a bow thruster. I know intuitively that if I practice better techniques, I should be able to manuveur without one. But I'm on the Mississippi right now, with a current that normally flows right through our marina, and at times when the wind combines with the current, it's next to impossible.
I've been reluctant to install the conventional thruster, with a tunnel through the boat, but have recently seen ads for the eXturn by Marrino, which mounts external. They say that it actually produces less drag than a conventional tunnel (rather short tube, although it sticks off the bottom of the bow), and that its design allows flotsum to slide over it. Installation is much simplified, and due to limited room just aft of the forward water tank (about the only place you can get to), that space could more easily accomodate the battery(s) to run it (and perhaps a windlass, another item on my list).
Does anyone have any experience with an eXturn, or advice on thrusters in general? My wife would like it to be on our Christmas list. Thanks!! Jim AshworthOn Fri, Dec 4, 2009 at 4:34 PM, pat noordsij < ()> wrote:

SpectatorNot sure of the costs but I’d check out the kind that mount internal to the hull and the extend out when in operation.

ParticipantJim, I installed a conventional tube mounted unit. I had the yard install the tube. I did the rest. It was easy. Running cables was the toughest part. I put in a Lewmar unit, very simple to mount and wire.
What happens to the exturn when the sling catches it on haul out? Sling marks are not fool proof.

Hi Jim,
We installed a Vetus unit, and the tube, motor, battery, and switching electronics for both the thruster and anchor windlass fit easily behind the bow tank. I would worry about an exposed unit at the bow as it would be the first thing to hit in the shallows.
