Hi All -I believe Navasana’s standing rigging is original 30yr old SS. As so would be outside standard service life. Although it currently works fine I am reluctant to head offshore with it.Anyone out there recently replace all wire and hardware that can let me know roughly what it cost for the job? Also any suggestions for riggers in the southern Maine / NH area that you would recommend / call for quotes? Thanks – Eric

SpectatorI am having Port Townsend Rigging do all of my new wire. I’ll let you know
the exact total within the week. If you like there price they may be
willing to make you a copy.
There estimate was at least 30% cheaper than the yard and they were WAY
more helpful.I’ll send all the info when I get the bill.

I had mine replaced a few years ago by Northeast Rigging. They are near Boston, but for a large job I’m sure they would drive to ME. They do nice work and they are cost competitive. Price depends on what you have done. I replaced my roller furling and the standing wire. I went to Norseman fittings and went up a size on most stays.Regards

john stevensonParticipantEric,
I had all of my main mast standing rigging (wire and turnbuckles) replaced
by Zahniser’s Boatyard in Solomons, MD in 2007. I had other stuff on the
yard bill so I don’t remember the cost of the rigging work but I know it
was over $6K. Used Sta-Loks on the lower terminals and turnbuckles. Swaged
fittings on the upper ends.
If you have off-shore plans I think it is more than prudent to replace the
original rigging. I thought about replacing mine while in Europe, but
talked myself into just having a rigger survey the boat. He, of course,
recommended replacement, but said he could not find any problems or defects
in the rigging. So I sailed back to the Chesapeake Bay with the same
rigging. A few weeks later I was walking around the deck, checking things
and found several broken wires on one of the lower forward shrouds. Glad I
didn’t see that while we were at sea, it would have taken a lot of the
pleasure out of a fun passage. On Wed, Feb 3, 2010 at 1:04 PM, <> wrote:

ParticipantDon’t forget to carefully inspect your chainplates. If yours are original they most-likely should be replaced. Hank S. Shay #80

ParticipantI replaced all my standing rigging myself. I ordered it from Rigging Only http://www.riggingonly.com/ I had them swage the uppers and I put on Hi-mod fittings on the lowers. It took me about a week to complete the job. Cost for both Mizzin and Main Mast was $1,949.52

ParticipantI found some cracking on the upper swages last spring (all lowers looked good) so I replaced the follwing: All side wires, swages, pins, turnbuckels, & jaws. I did not replace the forstay or backstay (the backstay was gone over when the SSB was installed, and the forstay was replaced when the Profurl was added.) One of the backstay swages is rusty and I will replace it before I head north the spring. I gave the triatic a good look over and it’s ok for now. (I did replace the triatic pins two or three years ago).

Eric,
With a good Scandinavian name like that, you deserve a good answer. You’re
absolutely right that 30-year-old standing rigging is way, way overdue for
replacement – at least 15 years overdue, especially if you’re heading
offshore. To my knowledge, the least expensive way to re-rig with top
quality materials is still through Rigging Only (http://www.riggingonly.com) in
Fairhaven, Mass. Figure $5-6k for new wire cut to length, with swaged upper
fittings and Sta-Lok lower fittings (that’s the smart way to go – even they
recommend it) pre-installed at their shop by pro’s, plus turnbuckles, clevis
pins, toggles, Sta-Lok backstay insulators (shop-installed) for Ham or SSB,
etc, etc. That price should also include all new lifelines, which (if
they’re original on your boat) you really want to replace. I mean, they are
LIFE lines.Rigging Only will provide you with detailed instructions regarding how to
give them the exact, pin-to-pin measurements they need. Then they ship you
the rigging all made up, ready to install right down to the cotter pins. You
can then pay a yard $90/hour to pin it on for you if you’re rich & lazy, or
just do it yourself. It’s straightforward even for a neophyte, and the guys
at Rigging Only will walk you through anything you don’t understand by
phone. (BTW, I upsized my mizzen wires to 1/4″. The other wire dimensions
are already beefy enough for offshore cruising.)Good luck.
Reef early,
Tor

SpectatorI spent $4300 for my new rigging not including the new forestay, which I
don’t have yet, because we just measured it today. I’ll share my full
invoice when I have the final total. This was for swaged fittings all
around with some sta-loks and isolators for my SSB. I also expect to have
one staylock in my forestay as well so I can thread the bare wire through
the foil.I’ll share my full invoice when I have the final total and you can see the
full parts list.-p

Thanks all; for the feedback on standing rig replacent for Navasana .
I am considering 2 options – replacing with all new SS or using Colligo Marine’s system of synthetic rigging. I am enamored with the apparent Independence of a fully lashed system vs mechanical.

ModeratorHey, Eric,
I was going to bring all sorts of cable along with me as emergency rigging
on my cruise, but settled instead with 3/8″ Amsteel for the big rigging (not
forestay or backstay) and 1/4″ for the other stuff. Same working strength
as steel, less stretch and is super easy to rig and put eyes in.Bob
