I wish we had some kind of database to show:
      1. Which engines have been replaced
      2. What they have been replace with
      3. Cost of engine
      4  Cost of ancillary items
      5. Labor costs
      6. Owner or marina installed.

We can do that. When I get home I’l make a form and a database etc.

What other major repsups should be included?

The problem with mine and I would assume others would be that the repower is
not all that gets done in a repower. I guess there should be a way to
isolate the repower costs. I found that ever project lead to another. This
attachment is a rough list of my costs. There are some items that are odd.
I run a restaurant and did most of the work myself with help from my staff.
That is why the labor for some items is much lower than yard rates, however
I did use some of my labor to work in the yard at the house when we had
finished the things that needed more than two hands and I was still busy on
the boat. That is the yard work that is on the list. I used a TAD
marinized Cummins 65 HP. I picked the motor up so there was no shipping,
same with the fuel tank. I used Deaton’s in Oriental to do the crane work
and the alignment. They also did the final connections at the engine. I
have almost finished putting things back together and hope to have a sailing
vacation next week. Of course working on the boat I have neglected all else
so we have to see what is on the to do list first. Not bad for me a 2 1/2
year project just to save a dime. I do feel like I learned a lot and I have
touched every spot on this boat that someone of my size could ( some times I
went a little to far and required a block and tackle to get out ). I never
had to call 911 but it was close.

I posted my notes when I repowered. It would be difficult to do a simple
comparison because cost and labor is much dependent on how far down the
rabbit hole one goes. Once you start replacing things, its hard to stop.

Interesting. I’ve never seen another cost rollup. Yours is a little over
$22k including labor and including new batteries and inverter. Mine was a
little over $21K and I did all the labor. My costs included a new V-drive,
      prop-shaft and prop.

      Alan,

Blue Water Sailing will have my article on engine selection coming out,
I believe, in the September issue.

I found it much less expensive to rebuild the westrbeke 58 diesel. The parts cost around $2000 and the labor in Trinidad was only $1000. The workmanship was excellent and I have since run the engine 200 hours w/o a problem. I also rebuilt the V drive and transmission at the same time. Jim Roberts #219 cutter

      Jim-
How many hours were on the W58 when you did the rebuild. Also, could you
list parts that you needed for the rebuild. I am approaching that decision
      as well.

      Thanks.

      Hi Jim,

Who did the work for you in Trinidad?

      Joe,
      Half Moon,

I hate to tell you that the PO of my boat did a similar rebuild and when
I pulled the oil pan a few hundred hours later I found all the bearings
scored and the oil pump way out of spec. I was hoping not to have to
re-power, but I did not find a lower rebuild to be that economical, even
doing the labor myself, and I would still have a 30 year old engine,
injector pump, etc. Take care that the job is done right and that
everything is checked well in terms of tolerances. Done right it should
last a long time; done poorly, as the job done for the PO was, it is
just a contribution to the Caribbean economy.
