ParticipantHave any of you run wires up the pedestal guard? I want to run a power cable for my Garmin plotter up to the top of the Guard where my plotter is mounted. Question is, I need about a 3/8 in hole in order to put a rubber grommet in that will tightly hold my cable. Question is, will drilling a 3/8 in hole in a 1 in diameter stainless pedestal compromise the integrity of the pedestal guard? If it’s ok to drill that size hole, where is the best place to drill it? up high, or right at the compass level?

You don’t want to drill holes above the binnacle holder which is just below the compass. The exception being at the very top of the guard where you could drill a hole. A lower hole would be “cut along dotted line” if someone hit the guard hard.I ran a cable through the guard many years back to wire in a switch for the horn and windlass. I wish I hadn’t done that. Anything you install has a lifetime and at some point in the future you’ll endup replacing whatever you put in there. Why make later repairs more difficult?
Wiring for later items such as instruments run up an external cable. It looks a little cluttered, but service is more straightforward. I put a small through-hull in the cabin sole to pass the wires through and squirt goop in among the wires where they pass through to keep water out. I wrapped cable cover over the harness and tied it to the guard with tie-wraps. There may be neater ways to do this but it works for me.

We ran all the wires for our Raymarine C-80, and Nexus insturments inside the ped guards. The exit holes are inside the insturment pods. We have a large offset guard, 1″ diameter tube. I don’t believe it was significantly weakened. You could hit it hard enough to bend it, but you would also probably break the insturments.
On prior Clairebuoyant, we had a straight ped. guard. 7/8″ stainless tube is a slip fit inside the guard. We used it to reenforce the guard where we cut a roughly 1″ by 1/2″ hole. I think this would be overkill for a 3/8″ hole.
Rather than a grommet, which is difficult to fit the curvature of the tube, try a couple layers of heat shrink after smoothing the hole edges with a file or Moto tool. Pics available if that would help.

Yes that is great info– i was trying to figure out how I was going to get
the grommet in the hole with the wire inside it! I could easily install the
grommet on a flat piece of aluminum, but with a wire inside it, I don’tknow
if I could get it in the correct 3/8 in hole.Your method would avoid using a grommet, so I could probably drill a
smaller, say 1/4 inch, hole which makes me feel better as strength of the
pdedstal guard is a concern! I will try it and use the heat shrink as
described.
And, yes, of course any pics would be appreciated!Rodd Leeds
