john stevensonParticipantAlan,
I just noticed you replaced the damper plate on your engine. Did that
reduce the gear backlash noise in the V-drive? What transmission do you
have and at what RPM does the engine idle? The reason I’m asking this is after all the assurances from Walter that the
backlash is no problem I now believe we were asking the wrong people. We
should have been asking Velvet Drive.I arrived at my winter berth in Jacksonville, FL on November 1 after
motoring down the coast most of the way from Beaufort, NC to Jacksonville.
As I approached the dock I put the engine in reverse to slow to a stop and
discovered I had no reverse (been in forward gear for nearly 3 days). I
turned the transmission over to the local VD shop and they found the reverse
ring gear pretty much totally chewed up and the forward gear ring not far
behind. They were able to rebuild the unit, but I have delayed having it
re-installed until I get a reasonable answer on why a less than 3-year old
transmission could fail in this way.The immediate answer I got from the VD guys was shifting between forward and
reverse without going to idle and/or not pausing in neutral. I’m sure some
of this has happened in the last few years when I’ve been trying to maneuver
in tight quarter with adverse wind or current, but it can’t have happened
more than a couple of times. If that caused the wear I saw on the ring
gears the VD is a very unforgiving transmission. I pressed them for other
answers and when I mentioned the gear backlash at low RPMs they mentioned a
possible damper plate issue. With the low PRMs required for shifting the VD
the damper plate must absorb the engine pulses that will smooth out at the
higher RPMs. The damper plate on my Yanmar is the same age as the engine
and transmission (<3 years).. The transmission and damper plate were
installed on the engine by Mack Boring so I’ve gone back to them (through my
installer) for answer – so far silence. If I don’t hear back from MB by
after the holidays I will likely just have the local Yanmar shop replace the
damper plate and see what that does to the gear backlash. So I’m very interested to hear if your new damper plate did anything for the
gear backlash.On Sun, Sep 26, 2010 at 8:09 PM, John Stevenson <>wrote:

ParticipantJohn,
It’s hard to say as I had the VDrive rebuilt at the same time. When I removed the transmission in order to place the engine in the stand, there was no doubt about the condition of the damper plate. Two of the springs were lying in the bell housing and the other springs were not far behind the same fate.
When all was placed back in the boat, aligned and started, I did not have that “clunking” sound anymore at low RPM’s (600-800) but like I say they replaced the joints inside the drive…. so…..
I do however now have a different sound coming from the VDrive more like a “Chatter” that goes away at after 800 RPMS. Walters says it’s OK….. I thought it should be pretty silent. I might remove it have it checked out one more time… as long as the boat is in the parking lot anyhow.
I frequently shift from fwd to rev without stopping….mmmmmm I wonder what disaster awaits me?

Hey John (Hi, Alan),
When you say “gear backlash noise,” are you referring to what Alan calls
“that ‘clunking’ sound” at low RPM’s? I’ve gathered this is pretty common
with the V-drives we have. I don’t love it, but I didn’t think I had to
worry about it. I do tend to inch up the throttle a bit to idle more quietly
when I can, just to shut the thing up.I re-powered with a new Yanmar 4JH4E a few years ago, soon after buying my
boat. The local Yanmar dealer seemed to do a good installation, but when I
was moving Silver Heels back from there to my boatyard slip I lost reverse
gear just as you describe. I had the (original) Paragon transmission rebuilt
by a knowledgeable guy who specializes in doing just that. He said (1) the
PO’s apparently never changed the oil in there (and so far neither had I,
although I had topped it off), and (2) even with the Paragon new-rebuilt I
could trash it again by habitually shifting much above idle engine speed. He
recommended stopping momentarily in neutral when shifting, which I do if I’m
not in some kind of crisis maneuvering situation.Of course, none of this explains why your 3-year-old tranny broke.

ParticipantI destroyed my tranny with a maxi prop and shifting back and forth in higher
rpms.Yeah- all it takes is getting into trouble around the docks abd getting
confused between the throttle and the shifter.Icalled back to the dock master
and said,I have a problem-what slip you in? 10,12 and 14 ! help-yeah
transmission- eventually my maxi fell off- bye bye________________________________

john stevensonParticipantThanks, Alan & Tor,
I’m hoping MB provided me with a defective or improper (if there is such a
thing) damper plate for the VD. If so, maybe they’ll stand up to a portion
of the cost I’ve incurred (yeah, right). My real goal is to get some clue
what caused the failure. I don’t want to have to do this every 3 years. I
was really lucky (always better than being good). When I approached the
dock another cruiser had just left and a lot of their friends were on the
dock and they were competent to take my lines and stop the boat without a
lot of crashing about. I was also lucky the forward gear held up until
then.On Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 4:15 PM, joe shimkonis wrote:
