An interesting discussion, but Bill’s right. Heavy snow up north
notwithstanding, this forum is about 424’s specifically, and sailboats
(and sailing them) generally. Piracy is a very real concern to all of us
who sail abroad, as much as (perhaps more than) getting parts for old
Westerbekes. Sharing information and viewpoints on how best to avoid
and/or deal with avoid pirates seems a legitimate topic. But maybe we’ve
already said what there is to say.

Except on the subject of firearms aboard, but that’s a touchier subject
      than which anchor is best.

I’ve lost track of the snow accumulation so far, probably over 10 feet by
now and winter is not over. I’ve been waiting to take a photo of the boat
sitting in a sea of snow, but it keeps settling. To have six feet of
standing snow, we’d probably have to get twenty or more feet of
accumulation. It snowed yesterday and is supposed to snow tomorrow again.

Living in the northeast has compenstations however, the ground doesn’t
shake, no mud-slides nor fires nor water shortages. It rarely gets over
90deg. There are other distractions in the winter; next weekend we go
skiing. Here in NH, we have the highest per-capita income in the country
and no income nor sales tax. Real-estate is affordable. By late February
      however, spring-fever is rampant.

Praying for spring so I can take the cover off the boat. I ordered a new
stove and have a few projects planned before launching.

      Rich,

I didn’t know all that about New Hampshire. And to that enviably long
list of “compensations” you can no doubt add zero annual pirate attacks.
New Hampshire sounds quite attractive… except for all that snow.

Where do you berth your boat during the summer?

At least you can take refuge inside. I choose to winter abroad in Portsmouth harbor, NH. I am REALLY looking forward to spring!!!
