Hi everyone
Does anyone have any suggestions for redesigning the port galley storage area that is behind the sliding doors? If so, do you have any pics? Ours is completely open right now and we don’t have any shelving or organization at all.
Thanks for your help!
Thanks,
Dawn

ModeratorHi Dawn,
I use that area for dry goods like rice, coffee, and so forth so no shelving
needed. You could use baskets that you can get at WalMart to organize the
stuff (I prefer the patented Bob Fine method of stacking and shoving, etc.
so you may not want to take my advice).I have seen half of the section (over the stove) used as a microwave. What
we don’t know or remember is if you have the ‘U’ shaped galley or the ‘L’
one.Bob

john stevensonParticipantDawn,
I use a combination of stacking baskets, wire baskets, and other
containers. As I’m sure you are aware, whatever is in there has to be
contained or it will be on the counter or cabin sole when the sliding cover
is opened on a port tack. If I were to modify this locker I would raise the
bottom lip about 3 or 4 ” and replace the sliding covers with hinged
doors. However, I’m not going to do any of that. It works reasonably well.
I have the L-Galley so I normally don’t have to reach over the stove to get
something from this locker.Regards,
John Stevenson

I use the basket method and also keep dry goods there. Also tuperware type containers for cereal and such work well. Then per the bob fine method do cram stuff on top – bob do you get any royalties for this technology?

RichCarterParticipantI never really thought about it, but you’re right. The space is not well used. My storage area has some teak glass holders on the left side. I assume they all came this way. If I put stuff in there, something invariably falls down onto the track and keeps one of the sliding doors from opening all the way. I put a cabinet over the refrigerator (U-shaped galley) so we have lots of storage, but better use could be made of the existing space. Please let us know if you come up with something.

ModeratorWe do all our oils cushioned with pasta, crackers, cookies forward. We
have a wire stand mid – with things like aluminum foil, saran wrap, etc
and we store our fruit on the top shelf of the rack. Then aft – cutting
boards outboard behind the deck scupper hose, coffee stuff ( thermos,
current coffee bag), clothes pins (they were there when we bought the
boat 13yrs ago). As Bob suggests – when we first provision for a trip –
lots of other stuff gets put in around existing items… while we say
we’ll document we never do and always have to search because we can’t
remember.– pat

ParticipantHi Dawn,
We use plastic baskets and wire stands to stow spices, ketchup, mustard, hot sauce coffee, creamer, sugar, etc. It can be entertaining to watch me prepare sandwiches when we are racing. Ted bought me some of those silicon gel squares last year at the boat show. They are great to keep things from sliding around on the counter tops. I am going to try to rig them in the locker to help keep the baskets in place.

ParticipantI had the carpenter build a shelf on the forward end of the compartment, which allowed us to open the door to the largest microwave I could buy for this space. I also had a 120 outlet installed on the forward wall as its power source. (We have the U shaped galley.)
The rest of the space is just stacked cereal boxes, snacks, etc
I converted the hanging locker next to the saloon companionway ladder into a pantry, using wire shelving from Lowe’s. This setup swallows a lot of groceries and keeps the galley clear.
I have pix if you would like.

ParticipantWe have a pantry behind the shower wall with 3 shelves and a light. It is great! We found the wasted space when we were installing a new shower facet.
