I’m shopping for new 5-gallon jerry cans for carrying spare water and
spare diesel fuel on deck. I’d prefer blue for the water and yellow for
the diesel. There are several brands available online, but no clear way
to judge and compare the quality. Does anyone have or know the
      strongest, most heavy-duty brand?

      Thanks,

      Tor

I bought Army surplus jerry cans for my extra water and they are great. They’re black so they heat up the water. You’ll need to find an Army Surplus store.

Were those surplus cans metal or plastic?

I just purchased a couple of cans from Northern Equipment. Jeep type plastic cans. 5 gallon. About $20.00.

Thanks, Bob. I guess I really have to go out and pound the docks to see
the comparable strength of some different brands.

In case you didn’t see it, there was a recent discussion on this very topic on the SSCA forum.

They were very heavy plastic, made in Canada.

Excellent. I don’t suppose there was a brand name on them?

The only brand name I recall was US. I’ll back to the house and see if I can find a name. I’ll get back to you.

Not sure the brand but I got mine at a “tractor supply” they have worked well for 2 years and I like the no spill on them. Spring loaded and seem bomb proof.

That’s a creative place to shop for jerry cans. Thanks, Eric.

Oh, so you’re the Norwegian bachelor farmer I keep hearing about on
Prairie Home Companion. Good to know you’re pure, mostly.

Anyway, it’s pretty rural around here. Green Cove Springs is just
outside Mayberry RFD. Maybe there’s a tractor supply place nearby. I’ll
check. I did once buy tetracycline (to add to my bottom paint) from a
      local feed store.

      Tor,

I have gone to 2.5 Nalgene jugs. They are easy to store and easy to
handle. You can find them surplus from dialysis clinics. I got ten for
      $20 (instead of $80 each…)
Here is what they look like:

      Hi Pete,

Interesting. Never even heard of those. Since I’m planning to lash the
jugs I’m buying on deck (rather than store them in a locker), I really
need 5-gallon cans for this application. I’d also like a capped vent
valve on the water jugs. (Not necessary on the fuel, since I siphon from
those into the tank.) These Nalgene jugs could be handy in other places,
      though. Thanks.
