Finally dug deep in the sail bags and am getting out the mizzen staysail. This one is new to me (our 424 is my first ketch). When is the best time to hoist this one? What are the benefits/drawbacks? Air here in the Sandwich Isles is usually 15-18 daily.

      AWESOME on a beam reach…. but what isn’t πŸ˜‰

Generally we use it when we’re on any reach that isn’t very deep, once it’s
too deep it’s blanketing the main.
You can also use it in combination with the jib without the main, but I’ve
not done that much at all yet… have to play around.

There is precious little written about proper sailing and trimming of
ketches. I was going to write to this maritime museum in England if see if
they had any older references… still on the to do list. πŸ˜‰

I’d love to hear what everyone else has to say.

It is also a great light wind supplemental sail. When you are hanging
every handkerchief and towel to grab the wind, don’t forget the miz ss.

But yes, wonderful on a reach.

Another sail I love but don’t have on our 424 (yet) is a mule. This is
a sail that goes between the miz and main masts up high. On a simple
furler. I crewed several times on this Whitby 42 (before it was
refurbished) that had one. It is great for stabilizing the boat in
rolling seas but needs to come down early. Here is a link that show it
      in use:

I WANT!! We could have used that on our trip down the coast, lots of
      rolling…

I don’t even have a spinnaker or a mizzen staysail yet or the solent stay
yet. πŸ™‚ I did put the tang on the mast for that though. I wonder which of
those are worth having first… probably the Asym Spinnaker.

I wonder if the mizzen staysail is worth the trouble compared to a regular
staysail. I have the latter and it provides power on all points of sail
except when the jib is blanketed. It can add anywhere from .5 to 1.5kts
depending on wind speed and direction.

Asymmetric spinnaker is the way to go, in my humbled opinion.

I have used mine on several occasions. It’s a pain to put up, it can’t tacked or jibbed – must be taken down and re hoisted on the other side because of the back stays. So it’s not something you want to use unless it’s going to be up for a while.
It does blanket the main, so IΒ  have the main down.
Funny the first couple of times I used it I had it up like a jib with the tack on the lee side. Then I learned the tack goes on the windward side…. Almost parallelΒ  to the boom with boom sheet way out, it trimmed a whole lot better like that.
      Added a knot maybe.
Make sure the cotter pins on the back stays are taped over so it does not snug the sail.

No mule, seΓ±or; only un burrito.

I do have a mizzen staysail on board that I’ve yet to fly. Halyard’s in
place. No excuse. I used to fly one occasionally on a yawl I had long
ago. A mizzen staysail is a good light-air addition on a beam reach and
maybe 2 points up or down from there. Would love to add a mule to
      Silverheels’ rig just for fun!

If you do go for the mule, let me know and we might make it an order for
      two.

OK, Pete, but I’m not likely to buy a new mule anytime soon. Too many
higher priorities right now, getting ready to head south again. In
truth, Silverheels could use new main & mizzen sails more than a mule.
And a new roller furling unit, and and and… And she’s not getting any
of those things this time around. Gotta’ go sailing!

      Hi all,

Would one of you who has a mizzen staysail PLEASE measure it up and post
the dimensions? We (and others I imagine) would like to have one in the
inventory. The more strings to pull the better!

      Thanks,
