ParticipantHi Everyone,
We are planning on heading out the St. Lawerence and then points south this
summer and I was wondering where everyone has been installing their solar
panels. I have a 1981 ketch with tublar davits by Ocean Marine and
was thinking of mounting panels there, but I wasn’t sure if it would be a
problem with acess from the stern.
What other areas have been used and how well does it work out?
What size panels are you using?
Do you have pictures?Thanks
Jack

ModeratorHi Jack,
I have one panel on the davits (Mar-Tek) and one on the dodger. Both are
Kyocera 135 watt. I could add a third by rotating the one on the davits.Between the two the 12vdc needs of Pelican are met. With a third, I could
actually run the water heater with the inverter. When underway off shore, I can rig a shaft generator as well that supplies
all the ship’s needs when sailing over 5 kts.Bob
I’m not being terse. This is from my mobile.

I have 4 solar panels on my davit system as you can see in the attached pictures…4×90 watt BP solar panels.
Hope this helps.

Jack,
Solar panels are a valuable addition to the cruising boat’s power grid,
the more the better. I finally put one on Silverheels a couple of months
ago, mounted on a swivel bar across the davits (photos attached). It’s a
single, 175W panel from Suntech; a great buy at $270. See
http://www.sunelec.com/suntech-solar-panel-175 … -1540.html for
dimensions & specs. No problem accessing the stern. Very worthwhile to be able to tilt the
panel towards the sun, at least on one axis.Tor

The link is to a 35V panel. How did you wire it up?I’m shopping for a solar panel in the next few weeks, but I want something that’s for a 12v system. If anyone comes across any good deals, please let me know.

Rich,
The link I sent earlier may be wrong. What I bought is this:
Power (W) 175 Watts
Open Circuit Voltage (V) 44.20 Voc
Short Circuit Current (A) 5.20 Isc
Maximum Power Voltage (V) 35.20 Vmp
Maximum Power Current (A) 4.95 Imp
Number of Cells 72 Cells
Cell Type Mono-Crystalline
Frame Type: Silver Junction Box: Yes
Maximum Voltage System 600V DC
Connector MC-4
Certifications CE, UL
Model STP175S-24/ab-1 “A”I don’t pretend to understand these things. Electricity is magic to me,
but I was intrigued by the Blue Sky “Solar Boost” controllers
(http://blueskyenergyinc.com/). So I asked them if I could use that
panel with their product. They wrote back:“The 2000E cannot accept this panel, it is a 12v in and out controller
with a maximum Voc input of 24v. The better choice if you are only
going to have one panel is the 1524iX, or if you plan in the future to
have more of the same panels (up to a total of 400 watts for a 24v in
12v out configuration) then the 3024iL should be considered.”Ergo, I wound up using the Solar Boost 1524iX
(http://www.blueskyenergyinc.com/products/details/solar_boost_1524ix/)
with the above-described panel. Don’t ask me how, but it works.Tor
