      Gents-
Started engine this week for first time after winter. Engine turned over on first turn of key, but is not pumping water out exhaust. Any thoughts on this? I did not replace the raw water pump impellor this season (I do it every other year), so I am surprised that I have this problem. My first thought is the V-drive. Perhaps that cooling passage is all clogged and not letting water pass through up to the engine. Ideas please!

Is your raw water inlet valve open?

Is your raw water filter screen clogged?

      Is your impellor functional?

      I doubt it’s your V-Drive…

      My thoughts….good luck!

Joe hit all the places I would check before even looking at the V-Drive.
How long did you run the engine with no water coming out the exhaust? If
there is a complete blockage or the inlet valve was closed you probably
have a torn impeller even if it was OK when you started the engine. Was
the engine hauled for the winter and the seawater system drained? If so it
can take as nearly a minute for the water to start flowing out the exhaust.

      Good luck,

Thanks for responses! Boat was wintered in the water this year, so no
seawater was drained–therefore I would have assumed I would get water
pumping pretty easily. I will ck the items mentioned by Joe next time– and
yes, my inlet seacock valve was open!

      Rodd,
I assume all was well last fall. You might have a clogged intake through-hull. Critters can grow in there. Pull the hose from the V-drive to the engine off. Water should run into your bilge. If not, open the strainer and check for flow there. If you have water flow from the V-drive, you may have a bad impeller, a rusted injection elbow, or a broken pump vane caught in a hose.

Check the growth on the bottom of the boat. You might have a clogged
thru-hull. I had that problem recently.

We had the same problem.. Cold water .. and loose belts. increased the
tension on the pump belt (such an easy place to reach) and it all worked
      fine.

Related question. No problem, but I’m trying to understand my cooling system. I have two raw water outlets on my transom. Occasionally, when the engine is under load, I have raw water ejected from both outlets. No overheating problems, but I’m trying to understand this system. Is anyone else’s boat rigged the same (W 58).

I have two raw water outlets, too, except one is the bilge pump. There
should be only one from the engine unless you have an oddball muffler.
There could be a bypass if you do. It would run water in excess of what’s
      needed to cool the exhaust.

      Dan,
Are those two raw water outlets in addition to the bilge pump outlet? If
the second is your bilge pump then you may have a leak somewhere causing
the bilge pump to come on. Two likely sources of a leak are the stuffing
boxes on the propeller shaft and the rudder post. I’ve had a small,
persistent leak on my rudder post.for years in spite of tightening the
      stuffing box and repacking it.

My bilge pump has its own outlet. It must be an oddball muffler. I was told by a mechanic that the extra cooling outlet is a bypass. I still don’t understand how it works or when it kicks in. Does anyone else have this setup? Can anyone enlighten me?

John, I have 2 raw water outlets as well as a separate bilge pump outlet. The first time I saw water coming out of two outlets, I immediately thought it was the bilge outlet. I ran below and checked the bilge and it was dry. This prompted a quick return to the dock!

Aloha Pete: looks like you have a lot more holes in your boat than I do. I found a stern picture of my boat (I’m presently on the mainland) and crosschecked. Next to the engine exhaust (to port) i have two drains on the same parallel line just to the right of the engine exhaust. I also have the propane drain below. On the starboard side I have the cockpit drain.

One of the two drains next to the engine exhaust is from the bilge. The other is the mysterious extra capacity from the raw water cooling. Thanks for the reference picture. I’d post a picture here if I knew how.

      Dan,
      Wich engine do you have?

Instructions for the W60 say that the engine pumps too much water for the exhaust and some should be diverted to a direct discharge. Pearson elected to not do this however. If you have this setup, there would be a T in the hose from your engine to the exhaust injection elbow.

Aloha Rich: My boat (#135) has the W 58. Your finding might solve my mystery. I think I remember a “T” fitting in the hose prior to the elbow (I’m back on the mainland right now). This could also explain why the “extra” discharge happens only under load. Perhaps back pressure pushes the excess water up and out. I’ve been through the W 58 manual with a fine tooth comb but couldn’t find any reference to this additional discharge port. I guess it only kicks in at higher RPM, when the pump output is too much for the regular exhaust fitting. Lots of boat mysteries after 32 years! Glad I only had one PO. Thanks.

      Hey Rod,

Just wanted to check to see if the engine is pumping water and if you figured out what the problem was. I had a flow problem, not the same as yours though. I popped the top off the v-drive and found a lot build up and cleaned it out (carefully). I have better flow now. Good Luck!

      Sean and the Group-

Thanks for asking, but have not been back to the boat again since the
problem. I will post the results and solution (hopefully) as soon as I get
      it solved.
