I need a new or used cylinder head for my Westerbeke powered P424. Currently I have a W63C but I understand the head is the same as a W54. The part number 30978. If you re-powered, have an old engine or know where one is located. Or you know where to get the head, please let me know.
The boat was re-powered in 1996, but the exhaust system was set up incorrectly and salt water somehow got into the #1 exhaust port. Before the head problem was discovered, I needed to change the exhaust elbow then the exhaust manifold. The water got into the exhaust port and caused corrosion resulting in and some small holes in the port. I am trying to get the holes welded, but the probability of repair is low. For this reason, I need a used head (or new) and Westerbeke do not offer the part any more. If I cannot solve this problem, another re-power may be required.
Any help would be appreciated.
Steve Weinberg

I don’t know where you are, but PJ Marina rebuilds more Westerbeke engines
than just about any one. Snug Harbor, RI. 401 789 7189. And no I am not
related. I am a rebuild customer.

ParticipantSteve-
Most, if not all 424s came with a W-60 or a W-58. The latter was similar but not interchangeable with the W-52 tho both were Perkins adopted Mazda engines. So it is unlikely that any 424 owner would have spares for a W-52 or W-63.
You probably already did a Google search on the Westerbeke part number to no avail. Perhaps if you have some time you could call or email marinas that do a good many repowers and ask if they have a useable head. People repower for many different reasons and there might be a good part out there.
Maybe you could research what boats came equipped with W-52 engines. There might be a forum for whatever boat that might be.
Maybe even Ebay. I have a W-58 in pieces in the garage because I saw it in Ebay.
Best of luck in your search.

I am located in Texas, but I will call them to see if they can help me find the head. Thanks for your quick response.

Thank you for your input. It is greatly appreciated. I tried the seach route with no success. I will evaluate all options before I consider a total re-power.
