Does anybody have an old motorola alternator from the early W60 equipped 424s? This was a big 120 amp alternator that may have been a high capacity option.

The smoke just got out of mine, and we all know that electronics don’t work once the smoke gets out.

I do have a rebuilt spare to keep me going, but I would like to get another to rebuild and put on the shelf. It si not clear yet whether mine can be rebuilt economically.

      Walter.

BTW, the new Haarstick jib is propelling me upwind at much higher angles, at greater speed, and with less heel. I may have to install some more track to keep her tuned just so when hard on the wind, but well worth it.

Walter nice to see you’re happy with the Haarstick sail I’ve been very happy with mine all of these years and I think I’ve owned about six or seven of them on different boats good luck Alan

      Walter,
I had the same unit on my old W60. I brought it to a local shop and had them service it. This place rebuilds alternators and starters. He said it was a generic truck alternator and not a particularly good one. Here’s his contact information. You might find a similar shop in your local area.

I eventually had him replace the old unit with a better truck alternator. He matched the mounting geometry so that I could swap-in the new unit. As I recall, he had to drill-out the mounting hole from 3/8″ to 7/16″ to fit but otherwise the replacement dropped in. I think I paid under $200 for the replacement. Though he could probably fix your broken alternator, you might consider calling him and asking for a similar replacement and put your working alternator in the spares box. The only thing that you might want to consider is the size of the replacement you pick. The replacement he made for me is much larger than the motorola unit. This means that its hard on the belts. If my batteries are low, it can blow a fuse in the regulator because the alternator can pull more field current than my regulator can handle. You might want to stick to something in the 120A size.

      Regards
      Rich

Going to second the rebuild. They are very serviceable.

I have one left over after my repower. Let me know if you want it. It was
tested about six months prior to being taken out of service that was about
two years ago and has been in my shop since then.

I have two of the motorola units. I think they are externally regulated. Not sure if I still have the regulator.

Are you looking to get rid of one? Will it fit a w58 do you think?

Bob, let me verify they are still in the shed.
You sure that is the route you want to go? They are enormous and only produce about 60 amps (in a perfect world). You could get something off the shelf much smaller with internal regulation that would probably give you years of service.

Nope, not sure. Only 60 amps? I have a delving doing 65.

I guess my answer is never mind. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

I have the same motor, same alternator. $180 for a total rebuild in Brooklyn. Bearings, brushes, posts, etc., etc., and a crappy silver paint job. Guy looked like a Chinese LeChiffre.

Linus is sending me his old one to have tested or rebuilt.

Chuck, why do you say they produce only 60 amps? The rating on mine is 120 amps. I have never seen it produce more than about 75 amps, but I figured that was all my battery bank was capable of accepting.

I always assumed that if I replaced it with a newer 120 amp alternator, I would have about the same charging rate, but it sounds like you have had experience that would contradict my guess.

The two rebuilders I spoke to said the old unit was superior to the newer smaller units of similar rating; but then they stand to make no profit if I bought new.

The W60 came with two possible alternators, the stock 60A unit and an optional 120A unit. Perhaps Chuck was referring to the 60A unit? As I recall, the 120A unit I had put out about 120A until the batteries came up to 14.2v. The alternator eventually went bad and was replaced. I think it overheated.

The voltage regulator had gone bad and I took the alternator to the shop here for testing. When they bench tested it dragged the motor that powered the tester down before reaching 120. The young guy working there said it must be bad. The old guy said it was too powerful for the equipment. They normally didn’t test alternators that big. I think the old guy was right. After the new voltage regulator was installed it worked great.
I included the regulator with the alternator. It is just a standard automotive type. Hope you get it soon

The young guy needs a bit of basic electrical/physics knowledge. The
      oldtimer was right.

The Motorola alternators are work horses that are easy and in expensive
to repair. They can also be converted to higher output units by
changing the windings. That is what the Ample Power folks do to make
      their great alternators.
