ParticipantWell, my 1995 Westerbeke 71hp engine appears to have a rusted oil pan and is leaking oil.I am preparing to pull the engine to replace it-back ordered until Oct 14th[bummer].
One mechanic suggested it may be possible to unbolt the engine and just lift the transmission side of the engine to get access to the pan.Anyone ever try this?
What is the best way to pull the engine? Thanks for suggestions.Any precautions ?

ParticipantJoe,
When you have the pan off, (and the engine out), take the time to
plastigage the bearings and the check the clearances on the oil pump.Pete

ParticipantA 6×6 across the hatch should support it. Raise it up enough to get some cribbing under it and replace the pan in the boat.
If you want to remove it you’ll need to take off the alternator and the exhaust manifold. An adjustable engine hoist chain helps. You’ll need to angle it about 30 degrees to get it out of the companionway. Put blue tape on all you trim then cover with duct tape.
