Dear BoatU.S. Member,
Do you own a federally documented vessel? The U.S. Coast Guard is
proposing to charge an annual fee of $26.00 for the renewal of certificates of
documentation for recreational boats. While the Coast Guard charges to issue
new certificates of documentation for boats, currently there is no charge for
annual renewal.
This fee will only apply if your boat is federally documented and would be
in addition to any state registration fees. For current information on
federal vessel documentation, visit the _United States Coast Guard
Documentation Center_
(http://smtp.boatus.net/t?r=3&c=22489&l=779&ctl=21DF19:9099F904052BA9001A4D1F18E630C29E&) .
We encourage you to share your thoughts with the Coast Guard on this
proposal before May 3rd, 2013, by going to

Please forward this email to fellow boaters with documented vessels. If
you have any additional questions, please contact BoatU.S. Government Affairs

ParticipantWhat is especially annoying is that the USCG just changed from a form that you could fold, stamp and mail with the scanable id and signature on the outside. This could simply be scanned without much handling.
Now they require you to mail the form back in an envelope. Not only you you have to supply the envelope, but the processer has to open it, unfold the form and create a trash pile of envelopes.
Sounds like we are back to the wonderful world of “reinventing government.”

ModeratorI’ve always put the form in an envelope anyway. I don’t trust a folded
piece of paper in the mail sorting machines. Also, I don’t like my
signature so easily available to anyone with a pen knife and a penchant for
larceny.Bob

Why not just fax the renewal form?

RichCarterParticipantI received that too. I frankly don’t care if they add a $26 fee as long as they make it easy to renew. Considering the cost of running the boat, it’s down in the noise.
I just renewed my master’s license. They now look exactly like a passport but with a red cover. It has a pocket in there for putting your TWIC. I don’t know what I’ll do with the wood frame I put on the bulkhead next to my nav station where I displayed it previously. Perhaps I’ll post a photocopy of the new license.

I just left my most recent license certificate in the frame on my bulkhead –
as decoration, and because I’m used to it being there. Pretty soon only we
“old salts” will have them.Tor
