      To friends and the readership:-

Who was the mfr. Of orig equip for the fridge. Adler Barbour? I am 500 miles
      from the boat presently.

Has anyone repaired or replaced the units (compressor, lines, evaporator)?

If so, did you replace the whole system or just the compressor?

      In either case, with what?

      Many thanks.

T, wishing he was on the Wavemaker

I have an original grunert engine driven refrigeration system. I’ve replaced most of what’s there over the past 25 or so years, one piece at a time. If you have the same system and have questions, call me.

My first phone call would be to Cleve from Sea frost and explain what you have and what you would like to do and see if he has any replacements for you. if not, he can probably suggest what you would need to do to upgrade to a newer unit. I would trust him explicitly. I’m sure there are other 424 owners who have used SeaFrost and would collaborate my opinion of that company.

Here’s a question, Thatcher: is your refrigeration water or air cooled?
And another: Do you have to run the engine to cool things down (not just
charge the batteries)? Do you remember how much current it pulls when
running? Is there a plate in the refrigerator or do you have what looks
like the tiniest freezer, about the size of one good law book? These
questions may help us figure out what you have.

If it has water in it in 12 years I never topped it off. SO I think if AB,
      the 100 unit.
      Batteries run the unit.
The evaporator has two openings, one for a law book, the other larger.

      Hi Thatcher,

If that’s an original unit it’s given some good service. I doubt it is as
many of these boats came with ice boxes rather than refrigerators. It
depends on what’s wrong. If it’s the compressor probably time to replace.
It could be the thermostat – they fail far more frequently and are pretty
cheap. If it’s more than about 10 years old or shows signs of serious
corrosion on the lines it might be less expensive to replace rather than
repair, especially considering new units are more efficient and use the
newer refrigerants. Also newer units are end user installable with quick
      connect fittings.

My boat (#135) had an ice box with no previously installed fridge unit. I put in a SeaFrost unit 4 years ago, when we purchased her. Easy installation and it has been running steadily (and quietly) here in the tropics with no problems for all 4 years. Even here on O’ahu, it only draws around 5 amps when powering up and only a couple at night.

Hey Bob, thanks. How are you?

Say listen so far there’s no votes for adler barbour and one vote for the
“Frost” unit made in NH. Got a view?

Hi Thatcher, fine thanks. You’re welcome but without looking and/or
      knowing the PO, I can’t say although i’m voting for Adler-Barbour. It’s a
really common unit at a decent price.

I thought you sold your boat last year. I’m glad to hear that’s not the
      case.

      Bob

I’m not being terse. This is from my mobile.

I did not sell it then I moved to Virginia and won a few cases, things
change. Put in a new headliner, new water tanks, new water heater, and now
going with the fridge. Then I will keep it. Till at least October or the
      next big case.
