ParticipantHi all,
Is anybody using an LED trianchor light at the masthead? I would like to put one there but am concerned about reports of interference with VHF and AIS.
Thanks,

john stevensonParticipantWarren,
I have an Aqua Signal masthead tricolor and anchor light. I replaced the
incandescent bulbs with LEDs from DrLED in 2008. I have not noticed any
increase in RFI on the SSB, VHF or AIS since that installation, although I
have not attempted to measure any RFI with the lights on and off. I just
had reliable radio operation before and after the install.I had problems with reliability of DrLED lights in the cabin and no longer
use them, but the nav lights seem to have held up well.Regards,
John Stevenson

ModeratorI’ve used them (Dr.Led) lights throughout the boat and haven’t had an issue
with reliability or radio interference, although I haven’t used my SSB.
Should probably try that out at some point. Regardless, you can run ALL
your LED lights for the electrical cost of one of the Edison bulbs in the
salon. (By the way, I’ve replaced them with led Edison base bulbs, too)Bob

ParticipantThe noise was reported on the orca green units in practical sailor.
They have corrected this. I use the orca green tri color with anchor. It creates no rfi that is noticeable when turned on and off while listening to the VHF radio. My ssb antenna is down so I can’t comment there.
The unit is the best made device I’ve seen. The rfi that was reported was reported by ps was negligible if you read the article. The amp savings is huge. If there is a huge concern turn off the light while using the radio.
If you have sat radio take a look at your GPS signal when you turn on the xm receiver. They throw out a huge amount of rfi. The gps signal is diminished but still works fine. Guess it’s all relative. All these great devices have trade offs. I like the fact I’ll probably never have to service the tri color in my lifetime. When you turn on the anchor and tri color at the same time you get a white flashing strobe. Yes I’m aware this is not recognized in colregs.
