ParticipantTrying to keep my old W58 alive without paying blackmail prices for “genuine” Westerbeke parts. I had seen various speculations on the original source for the W58 block including Perkins. So in the course of trying to find a fresh water pump for less that $600 I tried searching for Perkins parts and think I struck gold with the 4.154 series 200 Perkins engine.
NOTE!! I think there are variations on the 4.154 and the series 200 designation seems to be significant.
Found just the impeller section of the water pump without buying the rest of the case. Have ordered one from http://www.plowboyequipment.com $97 and change including shipping.
This may open a whole new source for much cheaper W58 parts including some of the expensive ones like the water pump and injector pumps. Will post a followup when the water pump arrives and I confirm it fits.

ParticipantHi Skip,
That will be really great if it works. Does the impeller kit include the bearing seal?

ParticipantThe best source I’ve found for info on the W58 is Bob Hanson at Hanson Marine Engineering.
http://www.hansenmarine.com Bob’s a great guy and quite likely can answer any questions. I buy my service kits from them.
Cheers,

ParticipantHi Quent.
The part is the whole front end of the water pump all assembled. So just remove the pulley from the front flange of the pump, remove the impeller assembly and bolt the new one in.
This first link is to the guy I bought it from. The second link shows a photo of the back of the assembly showing the impeller. The guy at plowboy even took measurements for me to make sure it not only looked the same but also was the same size.

ParticipantHi Roger,
Thanks for the link to Hansen. My concern would be if they are selling Westerbeke branded parts their cost and then ours, is really high. Nothing against Hansen, just the prices from Westerbeke to their dealers. Have you checked pricing from them for some of the common repair items like starters, water pumps (raw and fresh)?
Example, I needed to replace the raw water pump, the old one was beyond rebuilding. I checked several Westerbeke suppliers and all were very expensive. I looked at my old pump and determined it was a standard Sherwood and found it for about half price from a pump supplier.

I think I was told that the W58 is essentially the same base engine as the W63C. If this is the case, this engine was also used in the 1984 Ford Ranger pick-up truck. You can buy some parts for this engine from http://www.rockauto.com. I have purchase parts for my W63C from rock auto in the past.

ParticipantGot the fresh water pump impeller section today and it is a perfect fit for the cast iron core off my W58. So for under $100 I have a ready to install pump with new shaft, seals, bearing and impeller instead of $600-$700 for a new Westerbeke pump. Guess that red paint costs quite a bit.
The best part, I think this is the final confirmation for me that any other parts I might need for the W58 I should be able to get at a very reasonable price from any farm or tractor supply that supports the Perkins 4.154 series 200 engine.
