ParticipantMy strainer basket is gone on the Groco bronze strainer for the engine. I see some corrosion particularly on the long threaded rod that holds the glass in place. I have not yet found a drop in replacement for the basket, now I am thinking of just replacing the whole unit ( it is over thirty years old ). Do you guys have a suggestion or experience of which unit should go in it’s place?
Thanks
Linus

john stevensonParticipantI’d go with another Groco, although the strainers I inherited on Sarah were
all Perkos. I replaced them with Grocos.Regards,

RichCarterParticipantThe original strainer on my 424 was a piece of junk. I replaced it with a new Groco when I repowered.

Hi, my boat came with a Grocco. The strainer was in fair condition (no
corroded holes but the seam had split) and all I had to do was wire it
closed with some thin ss wire. After a complete dis-assembly and some time
on a wire wheel it’s as good as new. The new plexi glass was an $80 special
order through West Marine.

ParticipantKen my biggest problem is the bottom of the basket completely fell off. I will have to look closer but I think it is beyond repair ( not much metal left ). I am looking for a replacement part but the unit is old as I am away from the boat I will have to remove it to see if I can find the numbers on it. It looks just like yours. So maybe after I clean it up it will prove serviceable.
Thanks

ParticipantYou can get parts for most Groco strainers, even the very old ones. You can get the part number here http://www.groco.net/svc-main.htm but I would order the part from one of the online marine stores for a lot less than Groco direct.

I am re-powering my 424 and I will be pulling my current W63C. I will be either selling the entire engine or will be selling parts to cover some of the costs of the new engine. The boat/engine is at a marina in San Diego. I have been told many parts are common with the W58, however, need to compare part lists. It has an all new top end including cylinder head, valves etc., new exhaust manifold, mixing elbow, and new oil cooler. Runs great, but I have had water in the oil problems that I have not been able to solve over the past six months. Since I live in CO and the boat is in CA, I cannot find the time to continue to diagnose the problem. If anyone is interested in parts or the engine, please let me know. It probably has less the 500 hrs on the engine.

ParticipantHi Steven,
Are you replacing the transmission and V-drive as well or just the engine?
By the way, which new engine are going with?

Just the engine. Had the v drive rebuilt by Walter several years ago. Going with a Beta Marine 50 or 60 HP. Using my current Borg Warner transmission.

ParticipantPete Dubler decided to go with the 50 Beta and said he’s totally satisfied with the power after launching and some real world use.
Appreciate the engine offer but I already have a whole spare W58. If you do decide to go off the deep end replace the whole package I will kindly volunteer to relieve you of the responsibility of storing that large, heavy, greasy transmission and V-drive.

ParticipantWe repowered our 422 (older Yanmar) with a Beta 50. Still don’t know the results as we are waiting (impatiently) for warm enough weather to paint the bottom and launch. But others have also gone with the 50 and report being well satisfied with both normal and reserve power.
BTW – we did go whole way and replaced the entire drive train. The transmission is probably not much use, but PO had the Walter V-drive rebuilt by Walter in the late 90s. It needs a new home where the parents will lavish it with love and affection.

ParticipantHi, is that you Greg? Hope all is well. Are you starting to wonder if the winter will ever end?
You say the transmission you pulled is no good. So what model was it? I have the BW Velvet Drive which is running fine for now but is showing its age and might need some work down the road. If you had the same I might be able to put the two together and maybe end up with one good unit.
Actually as I think about it the same might apply to my V-drive. What model Walter do you have?
By the way, what V-drive did you get with the new Beta? Another Walter or is there some other option out there?

ParticipantHey Skip,
Yep, it’s me from up in the frozen North – at least that’s the way it seems this year!
Per the boat book from the PO:
They had a used Yanmar 4JH-TE put in back in ’96 and the Velvet drive transmission rebuilt by Seabrook Shipyard. Then they added a new Walter v-drive (2:1 ratio – not sure of the model # but can get you the serial number and info if interested) in ’98.
The reason I opted to replace everything is that the transmissions doesn’t mate properly to the engine – something we didn’t know until the engine was out. So I’m not sure what the issue is – we never had any leaks or other problems with it. We knew the engine needed a rebuild and I decided not to rebuild and put a 30 yr old engine back in the boat. Then when we saw the mating surface issue, the yard offered us a package deal on replacing the entire drive train. They needed a winter project for their engine shop. I really wasn’t planning on spending quite that much, but replacing it while I still have a paycheck coming in seemed better than having problems after we untie.
Of course, while the old engine was out, I took advantage of the access and rebuilt everything else: wiring, bilge pump systems, etc. Hopefully I’ve headed off some problems – or at least made room for different ones.
I am pleased with the results. More room, new engine beds, new soundproofing, better bilge pump redundancy, etc. I’ll be even more pleased when we’re out of the yard and back in the water.
So let me know what you’re interested in and I’ll pull the appropriate #’s and then we can doing some wheeling and dealing. 😉

RichCarterParticipantIf the 60 fits without problems, go for the larger engine. Consider max engine RPM when compared with your prop and gear reduction when evaluating this. I went for a 75 HP Yanmar and I’m glad I went for the larger size.

RichCarterParticipantI replaced my old W60 with the same engine about 6 years ago. Everything seems fine to me. I mated it to the Velvet drive. I found that I needed to change the gear reduction in the V-drive to work with this engine. It redlines at 3800 RPM. Since I was replacing the V-drive at the same time this was not a problem. I just switched to 2.5:1. I’m curious about what issues your yard found. If you get a chance, please ask them.

Participantdefinitely will ask them. Also may just grab a wrench and pull the velvet transmission off myself and see what I can find inside.
Back to the original question, to prevent totally hijacking the thread, I decided to replace our strainer and put in a groco 750, same as I used on the AC system. That way I have 2 of them on the boat and can always pull the one out of the AC system if something bad happens to the critical one on the engine. Also let’s me carry 1 spare basket that fits both.

Having matching strainers is a good idea but where my air con is mounted I don’t think I have room for the large Groco. But I’m going to have a look see. If it fits I may have a small one for sale.
RE: Velvet Drive. Mine runs perfectly but the PO let a leak from the anti-syphon drip on the back of the engine for a couple of years, right where it bolts to the transmission and the case is very corroded. It might be fine for years and I’ve cleaned it up and repainted but it does make me nervous.
So maybe you can sell me the case and keep all the guts. (that’s a joke in case my wry humor gets lost in translation).
I think the PO did upgrade the V-drive to a model 26 so may be good there.
